Jonathan L. Morris enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in March 1990 at the Military Entrance Processing Station Richmond, Virginia.  He completed Recruit Training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, South Carolina in June 1990, and was promoted to Private First Class.

Upon completion of Marine Combat Training in August 1990, Private First Class Morris completed his Military Occupation Specialty Training at the 0351 Infantry Assaultman Course, Infantry Training Battalion, School of Infantry, Camp Geiger, North Carolina, and was promoted to Lance Corporal in September 1990.

Lance Corporal Morris then reported to Marine Security Force School, Chesapeake, Virginia.  Upon graduation in November 1990 he reported to the Marine Detachment, aboard the USS THEODORE ROOSEVELT (CVN 71).  Lance Corporal Morris served as a Marine Guard during a workup and deployment in support of Operation DESERT SHIELD and Operation DESERT STORM in the Arabian Gulf, and Operation PROVIDE COMFORT in the Mediterranean Sea.  He was promoted to Corporal in October 1992 and completed his tour as a Corporal of the Guard.

In January 1993, Corporal Morris reported to Company A, 1st Battalion, 9th Marines, 1st Marine Division, Camp Pendleton, California.  He served as a Weapons Platoon Assault Squad Leader during a workup and deployment with the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit (Special Operations Capable) in support of Operation CONTINUE HOPE, Operation SHOW CARE, and Operation MORE CARE in Somalia.  Upon return Company A, 1st Battalion, 9th Marines, 1st Marine Division was redesignated as Company E, 2nd Battalion, 1st Marines, 1st Marine Division.  Corporal Morris served as a Company Training Non Commissioned Officer during a workup and deployment with the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit (Special Operations Capable) in support of Operation CEASE FIRE in Jordon and Operation VIGILANT SENTINEL aboard the USS MOUNT VERNON (LSD 39).  During his tour at Camp Pendleton, Corporal Morris attended the Corporals Leadership Course and Infantry Squad Leaders Course.  He was promoted to Sergeant in February 1996.

In March 1996, Sergeant Morris reported to Drill Instructor School, Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, South Carolina.  Upon graduation he reported for duty at Company H, 2nd Recruit Training Battalion.  Sergeant Morris assisted in training four recruit platoons as a Drill Instructor and led the training of three recruit platoons as a Senior Drill Instructor.  He was selected as the 2nd Recruit Training Battalion Drill Instructor of the year for 1998.

In July 1998, Sergeant Morris reported to Company I, 3rd Battalion, 6th Marines, 2nd Marine Division, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.  He served as a Weapons Platoon Assault Section Leader and a Rifle Platoon Guide during a workup and deployment with the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit (Special Operations Capable) in support of Operations above 40 Degrees in Yugoslavia, and Operation JOINT FORGE in the Adriatic Sea.  He was promoted to Staff Sergeant in November 2000 and subsequently was reassigned to Weapons Company, 3rd Battalion, 6th Marines, 2nd Marine Division.  He served as a Javelin Section Leader, Combined Anti Armor Team Section Leader, and Maritime Special Purpose Force Trailer Platoon Sergeant during a workup and deployment with the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit (Special Operations Capable) in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM and Operation SWIFT FREEDOM in Afghanistan and Pakistan.  Upon return in April 2002, 3rd Battalion, 6th Marines was assigned as the Anti-Terrorism Battalion for the 4th Marine Expeditionary Brigade where Staff Sergeant Morris served as the Headquarters and Service Company Gunnery Sergeant for nine months.  During his tour at Camp Lejeune, Staff Sergeant Morris attended the Staff Noncommissioned Officer Academy Career Course and Infantry Platoon Sergeants Course.  

In March 2003, Staff Sergeant Morris reported to Marine Security Guard School, Quantico, Virginia.  Upon graduation he was assigned as the Marine Security Guard Detachment Commander, American Consulate General Istanbul, Turkey.  He was promoted to Gunnery Sergeant in March 2004.  For his second post, Gunnery Sergeant Morris was assigned as the Marine Security Guard Detachment Commander, American Embassy Baku, Azerbaijan.  Under his leadership Baku was selected as the 2005 Company A, Marine Security Guard Regional Detachment of the Year.

In July 2006, Gunnery Sergeant Morris reported to Company B, 1st Battalion, 24th Marines, 4th Marine Division, Saginaw, Michigan.  He served as a Battalion Operations Chief during a workup and deployment to Iraq for Operation IRAQ FREEDOM 05-07.02 under Multi National Force - West.  Gunnery Sergeant Morris was frocked to First Sergeant in June 2007 and attended the First Sergeants Course in Quantico, Virginia.

In July 2007, First Sergeant Morris reported as the Company First Sergeant for Landing Support Company, Combat Logistics Regiment 17, 1st Marine Logistics Group, Camp Pendleton, California.  In December 2007, First Sergeant Morris was assigned temporary additional duty as the Company First Sergeant for Headquarters and Service Company, 1st Marine Logistics Group and deployed to Camp Al Taqaddum, Iraq for Operation IRAQ FREEDOM 08.1 and 08.2 under Multi National Force - West.  Upon his return in February 2009, First Sergeant Morris reassumed his duties as the Company First Sergeant for Landing Support Company.  During his tour at Landing Support Company, First Sergeant Morris attended the Staff Noncommissioned Officers Academy E-8 Western Regional Seminar, and the Senior Leaders Equal Opportunity Course. 

In June 2010, First Sergeant Morris reported as the Sergeant Major for Combat Logistics Battalion 11, Combat Logistics Regiment 17, 1st Marine Logistics Group, Camp Pendleton, California.  He served as the Sergeant Major during a workup and deployment with the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit and served as the Sergeant Major of Troops aboard the USS PEARL HARBOR (LSD-52).  First Sergeant Morris was frocked to Sergeant Major in November 2011.  During his tour at Combat Logistics Battalion 11, Sergeant Major Morris attended the Naval Justice School Senior Enlisted Leadership Course and completed the Senior Enlisted Joint Professional Military Education Distance Education Program.

In July 2012, Sergeant Major Morris reported as the Sergeant Major for Marine Fighter Attack Training Squadron 101, Marine Aircraft Group 11, 3d Marine Aircraft Wing, Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, San Diego, California.  During his tour at Marine Fighter Attack Training Squadron 101, Sergeant Major Morris attended the Senior Enlisted Professional Military Education Course in Quantico, VA.

In October 2014, Sergeant Major Morris reported as the Sergeant Major for Marine Corps Recruiting Station St Louis, Missouri, 9th Marine Corps District, Western Recruiting Region, Marine Corps Recruiting Command.  During his tour at Marine Corps Recruiting Station St Louis, Sergeant Major Morris attended the Recruiting Management Course.

In December 2017, Sergeant Major Morris assumed his current duties as the Sergeant Major for Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 163, Marine Aircraft Group 16, 3d Marine Aircraft Wing, Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, San Diego, California.   

Sergeant Major Morris’ personal awards include; Meritorious Service Medal with three gold stars in lieu of subsequent award, Navy & Marine Corps Commendation Medal with two gold stars, Navy & Marine Corps Achievement Medal with two gold stars, and Combat Action Ribbon.
