Sergeant Major Doring served three years in the United States Army Reserve before enlisting in the Marine Corps on 4 March 1991. He attended Recruit Training at MCRD San Diego, California where he graduated as a PFC.  He completed Marine Combat Training at Camp Pendleton and was meritoriously promoted to Lance Corporal. After completing Military Police School at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas, he was assigned to MWSS-371 MCAS Yuma, Arizona. He served as a Patrolman, Squad Leader, and Field Military Policemen from September 1991 to February 1994, which included a deployment to Mogadishu, Somalia, in support of OPERATION RESTORE HOPE. In June 1992, he was meritoriously promoted to Corporal.

In February 1994, Corporal Doring received orders to MP Company, HQ Battalion, 3rd Marine Division, Okinawa, Japan. He was promoted to Sergeant and served as a Watch Commander for the Provost Marshal Office and Squad Leader for MP Company. In March 1995, he received orders to MP Company MCB, Camp Pendleton. Serving as a Patrol Supervisor for Law Enforcement Operations and Field Training Officer for 1st Platoon, he was selected as the Non-Commissioned Officer of the Year for Security Battalion in 1996.

In January 1997, Sergeant Doring received orders to Drill Instructor School, MCRD San Diego, and was assigned to Company E.  There he served as a Drill Instructor and Senior Drill Instructor, and was also promoted to Staff Sergeant. In February 1999, he was assigned to Special Training Company and served as a DI, SDI, and Chief Drill Instructor. In May 2000, he reported to Marine Corps Base, Camp Kinser Okinawa, Japan, and served as Platoon Sergeant for Military Police Department-South as the SNCOIC of the night watch.

In May 2001, Staff Sergeant Doring received orders to MP Company, MCB, Camp Pendleton and held billets as a Watch SNCOIC, Watch Commander, and Company Gunnery Sergeant. In May 2002, he graduated from the University of Maryland with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice and was promoted to Gunnery Sergeant in October 2003. In February 2004, he received orders to MP Company, HQ Regiment, 1st FSSG, and was deployed to the Al Anbar province in support of OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM 1-04 where he served as the Company First Sergeant. He completed one more deployment to Al Anbar Province, Iraq, in September 2005, and was selected to First Sergeant in December 2005.

In July 2006, First Sergeant Doring was assigned to Inspector Instructor Duty with Bravo Company, Anti-Terrorism Battalion, 4th Marine Division in Amarillo, Texas.  In April 2009, he received orders to MCRD, San Diego and served as the Company G First Sergeant. He earned a Master of Arts Degree in Homeland Security from the American Military University in 2009 and then received orders to 1st Intelligence Battalion, Camp Pendleton. He held several billets to include acting SgtMaj, HQ Company 1stSgt, and deployed to the Helmand Province Afghanistan in support of OPERATION ENDURING FREEDOM as the Counter-Intelligence Company and HQ Company 1stSgt.

Sergeant Major Doring was promoted to his current rank in December 2012. He was assigned to Combat Logistics Battalion-15 and deployed with the 15th MEU in support of WESPAC 12-1. Subsequent tours as SgtMaj include Recruiting Station Los Angeles and the H&S Battalion Marine Corps Instillations Pacific SgtMaj on Camps Foster/Lester Okinawa Japan. He was assigned to Marine Medium Tiltrotor Helicopter Squadron 362 in July 2018.

Sergeant Major Doring’s personal decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal with 2 Gold Stars, Navy commendation Medal with 1 Gold Star, Navy Achievement Medal with 3 Gold Stars, the Army Achievement Medal, and the Combat Action Ribbon with 1 Gold Star.
