Colonel Boyles

Commanding Officer, Marine Fighter Attack Training Squadron 101

Colonel Boyles is from Cherryville, North Carolina and was commissioned through an NROTC scholarship at The Citadel in 1991. He was designated a Naval Aviator in 1994 and completed F/A-18 training at VMFAT-101, MCAS El Toro in 1995.

His subsequent assignments include: VMFA(AW)-225 Airframes Officer, Schedules, Flight Officer, and Pilot Training Officer from 1995 to 1999 participating in two Unit Deployment Programs; Marine Aviation Weapons and Tactics Squadron-1 F/A-18 Instructor from 2000 to 2003, and during this time he augmented VMFA-232 during Operation Iraqi Freedom 1; VMFA(AW)-533 Operations Officer and Executive Officer from 2004-2007 participating in Operation Iraqi Freedom 05.

Colonel Boyles commanded VMFA-212 Lancers at MCAS Iwakuni, Japan from 2007 to 2008. The Lancers participated in numerous exercises throughout the Western Pacific Region and served as MAG-12s forward based F/A-18C squadron.  

His staff tours include MAG-11 during Operation Iraqi Freedom 1, MAG-12 and MAG-31. In 2008, he was assigned to Joint Staff, J-3 Operational Team 5, National Military Command Center as Assistant Deputy Director for Operations and national command and control Strike Officer. In 2011, he was assigned to Headquarters Marine Corps as a Strategic Analyst in the Commandant’s Strategic Initiatives Group.

Colonel Boyles is a graduate of the Marine Division Tactics Course, Weapons and Tactics Instructor course, Amphibious Warfare School Honors graduate, U.S. Army Command and General Staff College, and the Naval War College where he received a Masters in National Security Studies.

Colonel Boyles’ personal decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal with numeral seven, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with combat distinguishing device and three gold stars in lieu of 4th award, and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with one gold star in lieu of 2d award.  He has 2,900 total flight hours primarily in the F/A-18 and F-5.
