Wayne Gantz graduated from Phillipsburg High School (Phillipsburg, KS) in 1999. He graduated with merit from the United States Naval Academy on 26 May 2006 with a Bachelor of Science in Aerospace Engineering.
Recruit Gantz enlisted in the Marine Corps on 20 October 1998, entering into the Delayed Entry Program, and attended Boot Camp at MCRD San Diego from August to November 1999. From there PFC Gantz attended Marine Combat Training (MCT) at Camp Pendleton and continued to Marine Corps Communications Electronics School (MCCES) in Twentynine Palms. Designated as a Small Computer Systems Specialist (4066) out of Delta Company MCCES, PFC Gantz reported to MAG-11. Corporal Gantz received an appointment to the United Sates Naval Academy and detached from MAG-11 in June of 2002.
2ndLt Gantz was commissioned at the Naval Academy 26 May 2006. He attended The Basic School with Echo Company from June 2006 to January 2007, and reported to Aviation Preflight Indoctrination and follow on flight training. He completed Primary flight training with VT-6 and Advanced with HT-28, both out of NAS Whiting Field. 1stLt Gantz was winged a Naval Aviator 9 January 2009 and reported to HMLA/T-303 for initial flight training as an AH-1W pilot.
Upon designation as a pilot qualified in model for the AH-1W, 1stLt Gantz reported to HMLA-369. He deployed twice to Afghanistan with HMLA-369, and was promoted to Captain during his first deployment. During his second deployment he had the unique opportunity to work for the Marine Liaison to the Combined Air and Space Operations Center (CAOC) located in Al Udeid, Qatar.
Captain Gantz reported May 2013 to MWSS-374, where he worked as Operations Officer, Aviation Safety Officer, and finally as the Company Commander of Airfield Operations Company. There he saw to the day to day operations of the Strategic Expeditionary Landing Field (SELF) and supported a wide array of Aviation Ground Support (AGS) operations throughout the southwest United States. In June of 2015, Capt Gantz transferred to Head Quarters Battalion Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center (MCAGCC) as Aide-de-Camp to the Commanding General of Marine Air Ground Task Force Training Command (MAGTFTC).
Maj Gantz was promoted and detached from MAGTFTC on 1 July 2016, reporting to MAG-39 for refresh/conversion in the AH-1, augmented WTI 1-17 as a rotary-wing aviation safety officer and served as the ITX 2-17 MAG Operations Officer. In March of 2017, Maj Gantz returned to the Gunfighters as HMLA-369's Administration Officer, and deployed in support of the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) with VMM-265 (REIN) in November 2017. Upon return from deployment he transitioned to maintenance and served as the Assistant Aviation Maintenance Officer.
Major Gantz was selected as the MAG-39 HQ Squadron XO in October of 2018.
Major Gantz' personal decorations include the Air Medal (Strike/Flight with bronze numeral 8), Navy Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Navy Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal. His service decorations include Navy Unit Citation, National Defense Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal (with 2 bronze stars), Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Sea Service Deployment (with 2 bronze stars), and the NATO ISAF Medal.
