Lieutenant Colonel Ryan A. Ferrell

Lieutenant Colonel Ferrell was raised in California, Virginia, Arizona and graduated high school in Okinawa, Japan. He graduated from the University of Southern California in 2004 with a history degree, and was then commissioned a second lieutenant in the Marine Corps through the NROTC program. After The Basic School, he completed Naval Aviation Flight Training and was winged in June 2006.

 

Following initial training in the CH-46E Sea Knight at HMM(T)-164, First Lieutenant Ferrell reported to the White Knights of HMM-165 in May 2007. Over the course of four years he served as a schedule writer and flight line OIC, deploying twice aboard USS Peleliu (LHA 5) with the 15th MEU for WestPac floats in 2008 and 2010.

 

In 2011, Captain Ferrell transitioned with the White Knights to the MV-22B Osprey. During the next three years he served as the logistics officer, future operations officer, weapons and tactics instructor, pilot training officer, and assistant operations officer, finishing his final months of this tour as the operations officer. Additionally, he deployed in 2013 to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom for VMM-165’s first Osprey deployment.

 

Captain Ferrell reported to HMX-1 in July 2014, where he worked in the operations department and plans department. He served as the plans department head in his final year in the squadron.

 

Major Ferrell returned to the White Knights in July 2017, serving as the operations officer for two years. This included a deployment to Kuwait as part of SPMAGTF-CR-CC 19.1, which supported Operation Inherent Resolve. Upon return from deployment, he concluded his time in the squadron as the executive officer until he transferred in June 2020.

 

In July 2020, Major Ferrell checked in to MAG-36 for assignment as the operations officer, holding this billet until his transfer to MAG-39 in December.

 

Lieutenant Colonel Ferrell’s personal decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal with gold star, Air Medal Individual Action with Numeral 2, Air Medal Strike/Flight with Numeral 5, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal with bronze star, and Humanitarian Service Medal.

 

Lieutenant Colonel Ferrell is married to the former Cheyenne Hamilton of Gillette, WY; they have three children: Cayenne (9), Hamilton (6) and Pete (4).
