Sergeant Major Jose L. Marquez enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1997 and underwent recruit training at Parris Island, South Carolina. Upon graduation from recruit training, he reported to the School of Infantry for Training as an Infantry Rifleman (0311) in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. Upon completion of School, he transferred to Marine Barracks 8th & I, Washington, D.C., for duty as a member of the U.S. Marine Corps Silent Drill Platoon where he served as a ceremonial marcher and Fire Team Leader until the rank of Corporal.
In January 2000, Corporal Marquez transferred to Alpha Company, 1st Battalion 6th Marines, 2nd Marine Division, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. He served as Fire Team Leader, Armory Custodian, Squad Leader, Platoon Sergeant, and Platoon Commander and deployed to Okinawa, Japan with the Unit Deployment Program. Sergeant Marquez reported to Drill Instructor School MCRD San Diego, California, in January 2002 and served in Charlie Company, 1st Recruit Training Battalion as a Drill Instructor, Senior Drill Instructor, and Water Survival Instructor. In 2005, he reported to Bravo Company 1st Battalion 4th Marines, 1st Marine Division, Camp Pendleton, California, to serve as a Platoon Guide, Mortar Section Leader, and Platoon Sergeant. Sergeant Marquez completed two deployments in support of "Operation Iraqi Freedom" in 2006 and 2007. During the first deployment, he was attached to the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, Battalion Landing Team 1/4, and during the second deployment, he was deployed to Iraq with the battalion.
In October 2008, Staff Sergeant Marquez reported to the School of Infantry West, Camp Pendleton, California, for duty as a Combat Instructor. Staff Sergeant Marquez served in Delta Company, Infantry Training Battalion, where he instructed basic infantry skills in the billets of Combat Instructor, Platoon Sergeant, and Platoon Commander. In April 2010, SSgt Marquez moved to Infantry Unit Leaders Course, Advanced Infantry Training Battalion. He instructed advanced infantry skills as the Mortar, Fire Direction Center, and Fire Support Planning Instructor and Course Chief.
Gunnery Sergeant Marquez reported to 2nd Battalion 2nd Marines, 2nd Marine Division, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, in January 2012 and served as the Company Gunnery Sergeant for Echo and Golf Companies. Gunnery Sergeant Marquez completed two deployments with this unit. The first was Crisis Response element for the Black Sea Rotational Force, which included Operations such as "Agile Spirit" in the Republic of Georgia and "Noble Shirley" in the State of Israel. Shortly after he redeployed as the SNCOIC for a Security Cooperation Team in Belize.
In December 2014, he joined the G3 of Marine Corps Forces South (MARFORSOUTH) in Miami, Florida. He held the Assistant Operations Chief's billet, where he battle tracked and supported all Marine units and joint exercises within the U.S. Southern Command's (USSOUTHCOM) Area of Operations (AOR). Gunnery Sergeant Marquez also served as a member of the Marine Liaison Element for MARFORSOUTH to support any possible crisis response requiring Marine Corps forces to reinforce embassies within the USSOUTHCOM AOR.
In February 2016, First Sergeant Marquez was frocked and until February 2019, served as the Inspector-Instructor First Sergeant for Communications Company, Combat Logistics Regiment 45, 4th Marine Logistics Group in Greensboro, North Carolina. He then moved to 1st Intelligence Battalion, Camp Pendleton, California, to serve as the Company First Sergeant for Counter-Intelligence/ Human Intelligence Company and completed a brief tour with I Marine Expeditionary Force Support Battalion as the Headquarters First Sergeant.
In May of 2020, Sergeant Major Marquez frocked to his current rank and reported to 3rd Battalion 1st Marines, 1st Marine Division, Camp Pendleton, California, to serve as the Battalion Sergeant Major. He deployed as the Ground Combat Element for the Special Purpose MAGTF-Crisis Response-Central Command (SPMAGTF-CR-CC) in October of 2020 and assumed his current position as the Marine Wing Headquarters Squadron 3 Sergeant Major on 09 December 2021.
Sergeant Major Marquez's personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with four gold stars in lieu of the fifth award, and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with one gold star in lieu of the second award.
