Sergeant Major Smith enlisted in the Navy, April 2000 and attended recruit training at Great Lakes, Illinois. He attended MOS “A” school in Pensacola, Florida, and MOS “C” school at Whidbey Island, Washington, for EA-6b Communication, Radar, and Navigation.
In March 2001, Sergeant Major Smith reported to Electronic Attack Squadron (VAQ)135 NAS Whidbey Is., Washington, where he served as an Avionics Technician. Sergeant Major Smith deployed to the Arabian Gulf in support of OEF aboard USS Carl Vinson and deployed to the Persian Gulf in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom aboard USS Nimitz. In April 2004, Sergeant Major Smith received an Honorable discharge from the United States Navy.
In October 2006, Sergeant Major Smith enlisted in the Marine Corps where he attended recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot (MCRD), San Diego, California. He attended Marine Combat Training (MCT) at Camp Pendleton, California, then attended MOS “A” school at NAS Pensacola, Florida, for Aviation Mechanic (6227), then “C” school at NAS Lemoore, California, for F404 Intermediate Level Power Plant Mechanic.
In June 2007, Sergeant Major Smith reported to Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron (MALS)11, Marine Aircraft Group (MAG)11, 3D Marine Aircraft Wing (MAW), where he served as a mechanic and CDI in the Power Plants Division. He deployed to Afghanistan with MALS 16, MAG 16, 3D MAW, where he served as NCOIC and CDI within Power Plants Division, in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
In April 2012, Sergeant Major Smith reported to Drill Instructor School class 3-12, MCRD San Diego, California, where he served as a Drill Instructor, Senior Drill Instructor, and Chief Drill Instructor Company A, First Recruit Training Battalion and a Sergeant Instructor with Company C, Officer Candidate School, Quantico, Virginia.
In August 2015, Sergeant Major Smith reported to MALS 41, MAG 41, 4th MAW, where he served as Power Plants Production Control Chief, S-3 Training Chief, Legal Chief, and Squadron Gunnery Sergeant. He also received TAD orders to Officer Candidate School, Quantico, Virginia, where he served as a Sergeant Instructor in Company C.
In June 2018, Sergeant Major Smith reported to Drill Instructor School challenger course class 4-18, MCRD Parris Island, South Carolina, where he served as a Chief Drill Instructor, Company L, Third Recruit Training Battalion.
In June 2020, Sergeant Major Smith reported to 3D MAW, where he served as an Aviation Logistics Maintenance Assessment Team Inspector.
In April 2023, Sergeant Major Smith reported to 2d Battalion, 7th Marines, where he served in Company F and Headquarters and Service Company as Company First Sergeant, deploying to Okinawa, Japan in support of UDP-W 24.1 and UDP-W 26.1.
In August 2026, Sergeant Major Smith assumed the billet as the Command Senior Enlisted Leader of Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 225 (VMFA 225).
Sergeant Major Smith's personal decorations include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with four gold stars in lieu of fifth award and Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with gold star in lieu of second award. Sergeant Major Smith earned an Associate Degree in Electronics Technology, a Bachelor's Degree in Electronics Engineering Technology and a Master's Degree in Information Systems Management.
