Sergeant Major Daniel V. Velis Jr.

Sergeant Major Daniel Vincent Velis Jr. is a native of Los Angeles, California. He joined the Marine Corps on 27 December 1994 when he reported to MCRD San Diego, 2nd Battalion, Hotel Company, Platoon 2081, for recruit training.  Upon graduation of recruit training in March 1995, Sergeant Major Velis reported to Camp Pendleton, California for Marine Combat Training.  In April of 1995, Sergeant Major Velis reported to Camp Johnson, North Carolina for Food Service Specialist School.  There he received the Military Occupational Specialty of 3381 Food Service Specialist.  In June of 1995, was promoted to the rank of Private First Class

In July of 1995, Sergeant Major Velis received orders to Weapons Field and Training Battalion, Headquarters Company, Camp Pendleton, California, where he served as Food Service Specialist.  In February of 1996, he was promoted to the rank of Lance Corporal and later served as the Property Room Noncommissioned Officer and Field Mess Noncommissioned Officer in Charge.  In March of 1997, he was promoted to the rank of Corporal.

In January of 1999, Sergeant Major Velis was approved for a lateral move into the Infantry field.  Sergeant Major Velis reported to the School of Infantry, Infantry Training Battalion West, where he earned the Military Occupation Specialty 0311, Basic Infantryman.  In February of 1999, he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant.

In March of 1999, Sergeant Major Velis received orders to 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines, Company K in Camp Pendleton, California, where he held the billets of Squad Leader, Platoon Guide and Platoon Sergeant.  In January 2002, Sergeant Major Velis deployed to Okinawa, Japan with the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit.  In February of 2003, Sergeant Major Velis deployed to Iraq where he participated in Operation Iraqi Freedom.  He served as a Squad Leader and Platoon Sergeant.  In July of 2003, he was combat meritoriously promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant.

In January of 2004, Sergeant Major Velis requested and received orders to Basic Recruiter School, MCRD San Diego. Upon graduation, he received orders to Recruiting Station Salt Lake, Recruiting Sub-Station Ogden, Utah, where he served as a canvassing recruiter and assistant Staff Noncommissioned Officer in Charge.

In March of 2007, Sergeant Major Velis successfully completed his tour on recruiting duty and received orders to 3rd Battalion, 1st Marines, Company I, in Camp Pendleton, California, where he served as Platoon Sergeant and deployed to Iraq with the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.  In December of 2007, Sergeant Major Velis was promoted to the rank of Gunnery Sergeant and was assigned to Weapons Company as the Combined Anti-Armor Team Platoon Sergeant.  In July of 2008, Sergeant Major Velis deployed to Okinawa, Japan with the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit.

In April of 2009, Sergeant Major Velis received orders to Headquarters & Service Battalion, Headquarters Company at MCRD San Diego, California, where he served as the Company Gunnery Sergeant.

In December 2010, Sergeant Major Velis was selected to the rank of First Sergeant; he then received orders to 3rd Combat Engineer Battalion, Twentynine Palms, California in April of 2011.  Sergeant Major Velis was assigned to Headquarters & Service Company as the Company First Sergeant.  In October of 2011, Sergeant Major Velis deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom 11.2.  In July of 2012, Sergeant Major Velis was assigned to Company A and later deployed to Afghanistan in support Operation Enduring Freedom 13.1 & 13.2.

In May of 2014, Sergeant Major Velis received orders to Company D, 4th Tank Battalion, Twentynine Palms, California, where he served as the Inspector-Instructor First Sergeant.

In December of 2016, Sergeant Major Velis was selected to the rank of Sergeant Major; he then received orders to Marine Combat Training Battalion School of Infantry (West) in March of 2016 where he served as the Battalion Sergeant Major.  In January of 2018, Sergeant Major Velis was assigned orders to Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 232 as the Squadron Sergeant Major.

Sergeant Major Velis’ personal decorations include the Bronze Star with the combat distinguishing device, Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with three gold stars in lieu of fourth award, the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with two gold stars in lieu of third award, and Combat Action Ribbon.
