Colonel Quehl enlisted in the Marine Corps Reserve in June 1991 and drilled at Marine Wing Support Squadron 471. He was commissioned in May 1994 after graduating from the University of Saint Thomas, Saint Paul, Minnesota. 

He served with Combat Assault Battalion, Aviation Ground Support Element, 4th Combat Engineer Battalion, and 2d Combat Engineer Battalion as a lieutenant and captain. He deployed to Iraq in 2003 as a company commander with Regimental Combat Team-2 and participated in the Battle of An Nasiriyah. He served as a staff officer with II Marine Expeditionary Force and deployed to Fallujah, Iraq, in 2005. He served at Headquarters, U.S. Marine Corps as a speechwriter from 2006 to 2008. From the fall of 2008 to the spring of 2009, then-Major Quehl was an advisor to the Fallujah District Police. As a lieutenant colonel, he commanded 2d Combat Engineer Battalion from July 2010 to June 2012, and the battalion deployed to Afghanistan in 2011. He was a military assistant in the Office of the Secretary of Defense from June 2013 to July 2016. Following his tour at OSD, Colonel Quehl transferred to HQMC and served as the International Affairs Branch Head and Readiness Branch Head. He served as the Assistant Chief of Staff, G3 of 1st Marine Logistics Group from July 2018 to June 2019.

Colonel Quehl is a graduate of the Amphibious Warfare School, Command and Staff College, School of Advanced Warfighting, and Dwight D. Eisenhower School for National Security and Resource Strategy.

His personal awards include the Defense Superior Service Medal, Bronze Star with gold star, Purple Heart, and Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with combat distinguishing device.
