Command Master Chief Harlan B. Patawaran enlisted on March 15, 1991. Upon completion of boot camp at Recruit Training Center, he attended HM “A” School at Naval School of Health Sciences (NSHS). Upon graduation, he proceeded to Naval Hospital Corpus Christi, Texas from October 1991 until March 1993. After his successful tour, he attended Operating Room Technician NEC 8483 school.
Upon graduation, he transferred to Naval Medical Center San Diego (NMCSD) from October 1993 to January 1997. In January 1997, he transferred to Fleet Surgical Team Nine onboard USS Boxer LHD-4 from January 1997-1999 and deployed Western Pacific in 1997 and RIMPAC in 1998. In January 1999, he transferred to Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton and assigned as the LPO for the Main Operating Room and Sterile Processing Department. In 2002, he reported to Field Medical Service School enroute to 1st Marine Division. He reported to 3rd Battalion 1st Marines for Operation Iraqi Freedom I in 2003. He transferred to 1st Marine Regiment in September 2003 and later redeployed in February 2004 for Operation Iraqi Freedom II under Regimental Combat Team-1 in Fallujah, Al Anbar Province, Iraq. Upon return from OIF II in September 2004, he proceeded to 5th Battalion, 11th Marines until his transfer.
In August 2005, he reported to NMCSD and held numerous positions as Senior Enlisted Leader, Navy Medicine West Retention Coordinator, Command Career Counselor, Asst. Plans Operations Medical Intelligence (POMI) and Command Manpower Chief. He was augmented to support numerous exercises including Cobra Gold 2008 in Korat, Thailand as the SEL for the Joint Medical Cell leading Sailors, Soldiers and Airmen. In March 2009, he transferred to Expeditionary Combat Readiness Center and deployed to Afghanistan as the Senior Enlisted Advisor for Embedded Training Teams in Afghanistan Regional Security Integration Command-West and the Joint Medical Operation Cell. In March 2010, he reported to 1st Marine Logistics Group as SEL for Combat Logistics Regiment-1 and Acting Command Master Chief. In July 2010, he transferred to Field Medical Training Battalion West as the Command Master Chief. In September 2014, he assumed duties as the Command Master Chief for 1st Marine Logistics Group.
In August 2017, Command Master Chief Patawaran assumed the duties of Naval Base Coronado Command Master Chief, the largest West Coast Naval Bases comprised of eight installations.
In February 2020, He assumed duties as the Command Master Chief, 3d Marine Aircraft Wing at MCAS Miramar. His qualifications include the Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist and Enlisted Fleet Marine Force Warfare Specialist both Ground Combat Element and Logistic Combat Element.
A graduate of Keystone, Navy Senior Enlisted Academy, Command Master Chief/Chief of the Boat, Asia Pacific Orientation Course, U.S. Army Combat Advisor Course and CNIC Senior Shore Leadership Course. He attended Southern Illinois University and earned his B.S. in Health Care Management.
His military decorations include: Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal 2nd Award, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal 4th Award, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with Combat Distinguishing Device and three stars, Combat Action Ribbon, U.S. Army Combat Action Badge, Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal, Navy Pistol and Rifle Expert as well as numerous unit campaign and service medals.
