Lieutenant Colonel John A. Sax

LtCol Sax was born and raised in Memphis, TN graduating from Christian Brothers High School. He graduated from the Old Dominion University in Norfolk, VA with a Bachelor's degree in Marketing in May 2001. LtCol Sax went through OCS in Jan 2003 later commissioned 2ndLt in Mar 2003.

LtCol Sax completed The Basic School in Oct 2003 and completed several syllabi in Pensacola, FL and Corpus Christi, TX and winged as a Naval Aviator in Sep 2005 in Pensacola, FL. LtCol Sax began the MV-22B syllabus in Oct 2005.

LtCol Sax joined VMM-263 in Sep 2006 and deployed with VMM-263 to Al Assad Air Base in 2007 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF). LtCol Sax deployed ay MEU in 2009 while attached to the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit. While at VMM-263, LtCol Sax served as the squadron Embarkation Officer, Assistant Logistics Officer, Assistant Operations Officer, Current Operations Officer, and Future Operations Officer.

LtCol Sax reported to III MAW with the Transition Training Unit (TTU) for the MV-22 early in 2010 then reassigned to VMM-166 later that year. During this time with VMM-166, LtCol Sax filled Pilot Training Officer and Assistant Operations Officer duties.

LtCol Sax was assigned to 2nd Battalion 7th Marines as a Forward Air Controller. LtCol Sax deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in 2012-13.

In May 2013, LtCol Sax returned to MAG-16 and was assigned to VMM-161. LtCol Sax deployed with VMM-161 on the 15th MEU supporting several POTUS missions and OIR in addition to being the detachment OIC for RIMPAC '14 exercise. While at VMM-161, LtCol Sax served as the QAO, AMO and DOSS.

LtCol Sax was assigned as the Major's Rotary Wing monitor at HQMC in May 2016. In May 2018, LtCol Sax was assigned to Naval Striking and Support Forces NATO in Lisbon, Portugal. During his time there, he supported large scale NATO and US EUCOM exercises as well as support NATO planning and policy efforts as an Air Strike Planner.

He is married to Emily Sax and they have two children. His awards include the Navy and Marine Corps medal, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal with Roman numeral four, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation medal with gold star in lieu of second award and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement medal with two gold stars in lieu of second and third awards.
