Major Matthew J. Wesenberg

Major Wesenberg was born and raised in Bloomington Minnesota, graduating from Jefferson High School. He graduated from the University of Arizona with a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology with a minor in mathematics. He was commissioned as an officer in the United States Marine Corps in December of 2005.

Major Wesenberg completed The Basic School in October of 2006 and completed Flight School, was winged as a Naval Aviator, and selected as a CH-46 pilot in September of 2008.

Major Wesenberg joined HMM-165 in March of 2009 and deployed with HMM-165 (REIN) on the 15th MEU in 2010.  After the deployment Major Wesenberg continued with the squadron to transition them to VMM-165, and completed the MV-22 transition in September of 2011.  Major Wesenberg then deployed as an Individual Augment to 3D MAW(FWD) to OEF in August of 2012 as the Helicopter Landing Zone Manager.  While at VMM-165, Major Wesenberg served as the squadron Administration Officer, Communications Officer, S-5 Officer, and Airframes and Phase Division Officer.

After returning from OEF Major Wesenberg reported to VMM-163 in April of 2013 and deployed with VMM-163 (REIN) on the 11th MEU in 2014.  During his time at VMM-163 Major Wesenberg was the squadron’s Logistics Officer, and Communications Officer.

In the summer of 2015 Major Wesenberg was then assigned to MWSS-373. Major Wesenberg was the Company Commander for the Airfield Operations Company.  In January of 2016 he completed ITX 2-16 and then deployed with his Aviation Ground Support Company to SPMAGTF-CR-CC in Kuwait in March of 2016.  After deployment Major Wesenberg became the H&S Company Commander and completed ITX 3-17 as the Air Boss for the exercise.  In August of 2017 Major Wesenberg became the Executive Officer of MWSS and was selected to be the Detachment OIC to continue operations aboard MCAS Miramar when the Squadron deployed again to SPMAGTF until he departed the squadron in the summer of 2018.

Major Wesenberg returned to VMM-163 in July of 2018 and was assigned as the Director of Safety and Standardization.  Major Wesenberg deployed with VMM-163(REIN) on the 11th MEU on the USS Boxer.  After the 11th MEU deployment in January of 2020 Major Wesenberg was selected to be the Aviation Maintenance Officer.  Responsible for 15 Aircraft and 150 Marines he managed the maintenance department for the summer inspection cycle.  In October of 2020 Major Wesenberg took over as the Executive Officer of VMM-163.  He is married to his husband Michael Newman.  His awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with gold star in lieu of second award.  He has earned the qualification and designations of functional check pilot and section leader.  He has flown over 1450 hours.
