Lieutenant Colonel Wilbur S. Oles graduated from Delaware Academy, Delhi, NY, in June 2000 and graduated from Norwich University in May 2004, earning his commission as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps via the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps (NROTC). After commissioning, Lieutenant Colonel Oles attended The Basic School and graduated with Delta Company in December 2004.
Lieutenant Colonel Oles completed Aviation Preflight Indoctrination (API) in Pensacola, FL, before transferring to Corpus Christi, TX for Primary Flight Training with VT-28, and subsequently Advanced Multi-Engine Training with VT-35. Following a transfer back to Pensacola, Lieutenant Colonel Oles completed Advanced Helicopter Training with HT-8. After winging in March 2007, he reported to VMMT-204 for training in the MV-22B Osprey.
In April 2008, Lieutenant Colonel Oles reported to the “Thunder Chickens” of VMM-263 where he served as Operations Schedule Writer. In May 2009, Lieutenant Colonel Oles deployed with VMM-263(REIN), 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), as part of the first MV-22B composite Aviation Combat Element (ACE). Following his first deployment, Lieutenant Colonel Oles went on to serve as Future Operations Officer. In March 2011, Lieutenant Colonel Oles deployed for a second time with VMM-263(REIN), 22nd MEU in support of Operation UNIFIED PROTECTOR. During the first half of the deployment, he served as the Airframes Division Head before returning to the U.S. in July 2011 to attend Weapons and Tactics Instructor (WTI) Course 1-12. Following WTI graduation in October 2011, Lieutenant Colonel Oles redeployed with VMM-263(REIN). After returning from deployment in February 2011, he assumed the duties of Weapon and Tactics Instructor and Director of Safety and Standardization before departing VMM-263 in July 2013.
Following selection to attend resident Career Level School, Lieutenant Colonel Oles departed MCAS New River, NC in July 2013 and proceeded to Quantico, VA to attend the Expeditionary Warfare School (EWS), where he graduated in May 2014.
In June 2014 Lieutenant Colonel Oles reported to Marine Aviation Weapons and Tactics Squadron One (MAWTS-1) for duty as an MV-22 Instructor Pilot. During his tour at MAWTS-1 he served as Standardization Officer, as well as MV-22 Division Head, before executing orders to Marine Air Group (MAG) 16, Miramar, CA, in June 2017.
In June 2017, Lieutenant Colonel Oles reported to the “Red Lions” of VMM-363, where he served as the Operations Officer, deploying in October 2017 as part of Special Purpose Marine Air Ground Task Force Crisis Response Central Command (SPMAGTF-CR-CC) 17.2 in support of Operation INHERENT RESOLVE. Upon returning from deployment in April 2018, Lieutenant Colonel Oles continued to serve as the Operations Officer, supervising and assisting in the successful transfer of VMM-363 from Miramar, CA to Kaneohe Bay, HI.
In July 2018, Lieutenant Colonel Oles reported to VMM-362, the “Ugly Angels,” where he served as Executive Officer. Over the next two years, Lieutenant Colonel Oles supported VMM-362 throughout a highly demanding stand-up period, from initial activation as an MV-22B squadron, to the successful achievement of Initial Operational Capability (IOC) and Full Operational Capability (FOC), prior to departing the squadron in July 2020.
Following selection for command in August 2020, Lieutenant Colonel Oles executed orders to VMM-163, the “Evil Eyes,” and assumed his duties as Commanding Officer in October 2020.
Lieutenant Colonel Oles’ personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, the Air Medal (with strike/flight numeral 1), the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (with two gold stars), the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (with one gold star), and various other unit and deployment awards.
