Maj. Katherine L. James

Major James is from Massapequa, New York.  She entered the United States Naval Academy, Annapolis, MD in June 2005 and graduated in May 2009 with a Bachelor of Science in Ocean Engineering.  Commissioned a Second Lieutenant, she reported to The Basic School in Quantico, VA and graduated from BOC 6-09, Fox Company.  Major James graduated from Air Support Control Officer Course 2-10, Marine Corps Communications & Electronics School, Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center Twentynine Palms, CA as an Air Support Control Officer, MOS 7208, and reported for duty at Marine Air Support Squadron 1 at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, NC.

In October 2010, Major James was selected for an Individual Augment for the Female Engagement Team.  She reported to II Marine Headquarters Group, II Marine Expeditionary Group, Camp Lejeune, NC and graduated from the Female Engagement Team local school.  From February 2011 through November 2011, Major James deployed in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM as the dual billets of Platoon Commander and FET Liaison Officer.  Her platoon supported Regional Command (South West) in direct support of Regimental Combat Team 1 and Regimental Combat Team 5, eight subordinate maneuver battalions, and 17 infantry companies in Southern Helmand Province, specifically Marjeh, Nawa, and Garmsir.  In May 2011, Major James was promoted to First Lieutenant.

Post deployment, Major James reported back to MASS-1 and served as and Air Support Control Officer and the Assistant Weapons and Tactics Training Program Officer.  During her tenure with MASS-1, she earned her Tactical Air Director qualification and Helicopter Director qualification. 

In August 2012, Major James reported to Marine Tactical Air Command Squadron 28, MCAS Cherry Point, NC and served as the Training Officer, Adjutant, Legal Officer, and as a Marine Air Command and Control Officer.  During her tenure with MTACS-28, she earned her Close Battle Cell Coordinator qualification, Air Defense Cell Coordinator qualification, and Airspace Control Officer certification in the Tactical Air Command Center.  In August 2013, she was promoted to the rank of Captain.

In February 2014, Major James reported back to MASS-1 and assumed command of Headquarters and Services Company.  During this timeframe, Major James also earned her Air Support Element Officer-in-Charge, Senior Air Director, and Direct Air Support Center Officer-in-Charge qualifications. 

In March 2015, Major James relinquished command and assumed the duties of Assistant Operations Officer until reporting for duty at Marine Air Support Squadron 3, Camp Pendleton, CA in May 2015.  In June 2015, she assumed command of Air Support Company. While Company Commander, she graduated from Weapons and Tactics Instructor Course 1-17 in the Command, Control, and Communications Department of Marine Aviation Weapons and Tactics Squadron 1, earning the additional 7277 MOS.  In May 2016, she relinquished command and assumed the duties as the Assistant Operations Officer and as the Weapons and Tactics Training Program Officer-in-Charge for MASS-3.

In July 2018, Major James reported to I Marine Expeditionary Force Information Group (I MIG) and assumed the responsibilities of the Electromagnetic Spectrum Operations Cell (EMSOC) Officer-in-Charge, designing, developing, and integrating the team across all Operations in the Information Environment.  In August 2019, Major James was promoted, and in May 2020, Major James assumed the responsibilities of the Information Warfare Coordinator, the lead information position for I MEF.

In July 2020, Major James reported to MASS-3 and assumed the responsibilities as the squadron Executive Officer.

Major James’ personal awards and decorations include: Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with Gold Star and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with Gold Star.
