MCIWEST welcomes new commanding general

Marine Corps Installations West welcomed a new commanding general as Maj. Gen. Michael R. Lehnert relinquished his responsibilities to Maj. Gen. Anthony L. Jackson during a change of command ceremony here, Sept. 29.

Jacksontakes over seven installations that span from Southern California to Western Arizona. These installations provide continuous, effective service and support to satisfy present and future joint and expeditionary warfare requirements.

Jackson graduated from San Jose State University in 1971, completing his master’s degree in 1973.

Upon completion of The Basic School, the Fort Lewis, Wash., native, was assigned as the Rifle and Weapons Company commander for 1st Battalion, 5th Marines, 1st Marine Division.

Upon completion of the United States Army War College in 1998, he served as the chief of staff, Joint Task Force-555, in support of Operation Enduring Freedom-Philippines. From 2003 to 2005, he served as the Assistant Chief of Staff, 1st Marine Expeditionary Force and deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

He most recently served as the Director of Operations and Logistics, United States Central Command.

His personal decorations include a Bronze Star Medal, a Meritorious Service Medal, a Legion of Merit with oak leaf cluster, a Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, a Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with gold star, a Defense Meritorious Service Medal, an Iraq Campaign Medal, a Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, a Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, a Korean Defense Service Medal, a National Defense Service Medal with bronze star and Navy and Marine Corps Service Medal.

Lehnert received an undergraduate degree in history from Central Michigan University in 1973. Upon completion of The Basic School, he was assigned to MCB Camp Lejeune, N.C., where he served as the commander and maintenance officer of various commands.

After graduating Armed Forces Staff College in 1987, he was assigned to the United States Southern Command. During this time, he participated in Operations Just Cause and Promote Liberty.

In 2003, he deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom as commander of Marine Logistics Command. 

Lehnert most recently served as the chief of staff, United States Southern Command.

Lehnert’s personal decorations include a Defense Superior Medal with one oak leaf cluster, a Legion of Merit with a gold star, a Defense Meritorious Service Medal with two oak leaf clusters, a Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with gold star, and a Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal.
