Equal opportunity advisor joins 3rd MAW

The 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing recently welcomed a new equal opportunity advisor to lead the more than 50 representatives throughout its units, July 15.

As the new EO advisor, Gunnery Sgt. Brian Hahne’s mission is to provide the commanding general with guidance to ensure his Marines understand the EO program and that EO representatives receive initial and sustainment training.

“It is important to help provide equal opportunity guidance to Marines because operational effectiveness and trust in our leadership is paramount for mission readiness,” said Hahne.

The overarching goal of equal opportunity advisors, like Hahne and the representatives they train, is to support their respective units by educating Marines on how to combat racial, gender, religious and other biases within the ranks. They do this by providing training, education, guidance and assistance on issues of discrimination and sexual harassment.

“We provide annual training, and I personally have Marines read the commanding officer and the commandant’s letters on equal opportunity when they check into the unit,” said Staff Sgt. Timothy Donovan, an EO representative with Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron (H&HS).

Everyone is on a level playing field, and no one is treated any differently. This helps unit cohesion, according to Donovan.

“It’s one Marine Corps; there is no discrimination between age, race, [or] gender. You are a Marine,” said Donovan. “[Equal opportunity representatives] attend a week-long course learning how to help people of all religions, races, creeds and gender overcome their differences and work together as one Marine Corps.”

This mentality carries on throughout the ranks and is what Hahne seeks to foster in his new unit.

“We help the commanders maintain a positive command climate,” said Hahne. “What we [try to] ensure is that everyone is being treated with dignity and respect. Also, that the command can function as a unit without breakdowns in good order and discipline, or morale issues due to biases of gender, religion or other things of that nature.”

Hahne served aboard Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, Calif., with the Legal Services Support Team, providing legal expertise to Marines prior to his appointment as the EO advisor.

His three years of experience with the installation gives him an advantage, he explained. He will use this familiarity to his advantage as he continues to provide guidance to the Marines, Sailors and employees of 3rd MAW.

“It’s a pretty big responsibility, but it’s one that I feel like I have been prepared for,” said Hahne. “I’m new to the Equal Opportunity Program, but I’m not new to the Marine Corps. I have experience from serving in other billets throughout my 18 years that I can fall back on when I need to.”
