Update: Fatality at 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing

A Sailor assigned to 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing died today from injuries sustained during an incident on Feb. 21.

At approximately 6:10 p.m. on Feb. 21, the Sailor was struck by a spinning UH-1Y Venom tail rotor blade while the aircraft was on deck at Marine Corps Air Station Camp Pendleton.

Emergency Medical Services responded and the Sailor was transported to Scripps La Jolla Medical Facility. The Sailor was pronounced dead at approximately 5:43 a.m.

The Sailor’s name is withheld pending 24 hour next-of-kin notification.

The incident is currently under investigation.
