After weeks of planning, the spouses of the Marine Corps Air Station Miramar Officers’ Spouses’ Club kicked off a golf tournament to raise scholarship money for military children aboard MCAS Miramar, Calif., April 25.

Fourteen volunteers with the Officers’ Spouses’ Club organized the tournament, which included raffles and prizes for top golfers.

“This is the 11th annual tournament,” said Lesley Henger, chairman of the Officers’ Spouses’ Club and a lead organizer of the tournament. “I was here for the very first one, so when they needed someone to step up and handle this, I thought it would be great.”

The participants played 18 holes in teams of three or four members.

“Our turnout was great,” said Henger. “We had 110 people and there were also two other tournaments today; one at [Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, Calif.] and one at [Marine Corps Air Station Yuma, Ariz.]”
The golf tournament utilized donated gifts and money. The goal for the tournament was to double the amount that was raised last year.

“Last year, I think they raised about $5,000,” said Henger. “I am confident after all of our expenses are paid we will have anywhere from $10,000 to $15,000. Anything pass $10,000 will be an added bonus.”
After the tournament, participants and volunteers enjoyed a luncheon as winners of the golf tournament and raffles were announced.

“I hope everybody had a great time,” Henger said. “We really appreciate the support and we’re really grateful for the sponsors; we couldn’t do it without them.”
