Marines and Sailors with Marine Corps Air Station Miramar and 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing conducted a station wide cleanup aboard the air station, Sept. 4.

Service members conducted the cleanup to promote environmental stewardship around the installation.

Approximately 250 Service members met in the morning at the parade deck to be divided into six separate groups. Each group was responsible for cleaning a sector of the base, which provided a crucial part in the upkeep of the air station.

“It’s important because we can’t let our base, basically our home, look like a mess,” said Sgt. Kyle Dapson, a safety and survival mechanic with Marine Aerial Refueler Transport Squadron (VMGR) 352. “We are Marines, and we live here so we have to make it look professional, like a Marine.”

Service members cut grass, trimmed hedges, collected litter and turned in all recyclable material. They also conducted a cleanup alongside major roadways bordering the air station.

“This is where we live and where we work. We don’t want to go around and be unclean,” said Staff Sgt. Timothy Donovan, an administrative specialist with Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron.

This event allows military members to maintain a sense of pride and honor in their air station.

“I like doing this. It gets me out of the everyday cycle of what I usually do,” said Dapson. “I like being able to guide Marines and it makes me feel good to help clean up the base.”

This event helps the air station maintain its overall cleanliness. If everyone does their part, a difference can be made.
