Thousands joined base officials with Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, Calif., for the 2014 Miramar Air Show opening ceremony, Oct. 3.

The air show is the largest military air show in the world and people from around the globe gathered to see what the Marines and Sailors of the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing and MCAS Miramar can do.

The ceremony began with the singing of the national anthem, and a quick word from installation and community officials.

“To the San Diego community, I want to say thank you for supporting us and what we do,” said Col. John Farnam, the air station’s commanding officer. “When you are walking around the flight line, looking at all of the displays we have, you will see some Marines. Some may be standing around helping guide people or working, but I want you to take a moment to stop and ask them where they’re from and what they do to support your freedom. They truly are a national treasure.”

The ceremony featured a performance by the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing Band, who played ceremonial music and other songs for the crowd.

As the ceremony came to a conclusion, crowds eagerly turned their eyes to the sky and listened as announcers began passing information on future acts.

“We’re really looking forward to showing you what our Marines and aircraft are capable of,” said Maj. Gen. Michael Rocco, 3rd MAW commanding general. “We’ve got a great show planned for you. We have everything from the Marine Air-Ground Task Force demonstration to the final flight of the CH-46. Without further ado, let’s start the air show!”
