Franzen is from Poway, California.  He attended the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) under a Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps scholarship and earned his commission as a 2ndLt in June 2002 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology.  He completed The Basic School in 2003 and was designated a Naval Aviator

LtCol Penton is from Baton Rouge, Louisiana and graduated from Louisiana State University. Upon graduation he attended OCS in January 2002 and was commissioned as a 2ndLt. He reported to Naval Air Station Pensacola for flight training and was winged as a Naval Flight Officer in November 2004. LtCol Penton then reported to VMFAT-101 at MCAS Miramar
