Sergeant Major Smith graduated from Willowbrook High School in Villa Park, Illinois in June of 1992. He attended boot camp at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego, California, in August of 1992. Upon completion of Marine Combat Training, he attended the Basic Refrigeration Mechanics Course in Courthouse Bay, Camp Lejeune, NC.
His first permanent duty assignment was with Marine Wing Support Squadron-371, Marine Corps Air Station Yuma, Arizona in March 1993. During his tour, Sergeant Major Smith supported numerous Weapons Training Instruction (WTI) exercises.
In June 1996, Sergeant Major Smith was assigned to Marine Wing Communication Squadron-48, Chicago, Illinois for independent duty. During this period, he deployed to Norway in support of Battle Griffin 1999. In addition to his primary MOS, Sergeant Major Smith also held the billet of the Group Color Sergeant for Marine Air Control Group-48.
Sergeant Major Smith reported to Drill Instructor School, in January 2000. Upon completion of DI school he was assigned to Company M and Receiving Company where he held the billets of Drill Instructor, Senior Drill Instructor and Nights Processing Drill Instructor. During this tour, he was meritoriously promoted to Staff Sergeant and attended the Utilities Chief Course where he was the recipient of the Class Academic Achievement Award, for graduating first in his class.
After a successful tour of Drill Instructor duty, Sergeant Major Smith was assigned to 3d Material Readiness Battalion, in January 2004. As the Maintenance Chief, Sergeant Major Smith deployed to Korea in support of various training exercises.
In January 2005, Sergeant Major Smith was transferred to 1st Maintenance Battalion, Camp Pendleton, California and was assigned to H&S Company, where he held the billets of Utilities Chief and Company Gunnery Sergeant. In February 2006, Sergeant Major Smith deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Sergeant Major Smith received orders back to the Drill Instructor duty for his second assignment, in April 2007. He was assigned to 3d Recruit Training Battalion as a Chief Drill Instructor for Company M. In September 2008, Sergeant Major Smith was assigned to Drill Instructor School as an instructor where he held the billets of Standard Operating Procedures Instructor, Leadership Instructor, and Chief Instructor.
In February 2010, Sergeant Major Smith executed orders to Marine Wing Support Squadron-373, Miramar, California where he held the billet of Company First Sergeant and deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
Sergeant Major Smith transferred to Combat Logistics Regiment-3, Okinawa, Japan, in October 2011, where he was assigned as the Company First Sergeant for General Support Motor Transport Company.
In June 2013, Sergeant Major Smith reported for duty to First Combat Engineer Battalion and was assigned to Mobility Assault Company. During this time he deployed to Afghanistan for his third combat deployment.
Shortly after his deployment, Sergeant Major Smith was transferred back to Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego for his third tour of duty in July 2014, and was assigned to 3d Recruit training Battalion, Company L.
In November 2015 Sergeant Major Smith was selected to the rank of Sergeant Major and in January 2016 he received orders to HMLA-267 where he is currently assigned as the Squadron Sergeant Major.
Sergeant Major Smith’s personal awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with 4 gold stars in lieu of fifth award, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with gold star in lieu of second award, and the Army Achievement Medal.
