Sergeant Major Fry

Sergeant Major, Marine Aircraft Group 13

Private Fry completed recruit training at MCRD San Diego, CA in October 1986 and was assigned to Camp Geiger, NC for Infantry Training School as a basic rifleman.

In January 1987, Private First Class Fry received orders to Marine Barracks, Norfolk, VA.  Marine Barracks, Norfolk, VA was later re-designated as Fleet Anti-terrorist Security Team (FAST) Company, Marine Corps Security Forces (MCSF) Battalion Atlantic. 

In June 1989, Corporal (Cpl) Fry was promoted meritoriously and assigned to Company E, 2nd Battalion, 2nd Marines, 2nd Marine Division. 

In July 1990, Cpl Fry lateral moved to Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) 6046, Aviation Maintenance Administration Specialist and was assigned to Marine Aviation Logistical Squadron (MALS) 32, Marine Aircraft Group (MAG) 32, Second Marine Aircraft Wing (2DMAW), Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Cherry Point, NC.  While assigned to MALS-32, he served in the Desert Storm in 1991 with Marine Attack Squadron (VMA) 542, MAG-13. 

In September 1993, Sergeant Fry was assigned to Recruiting Station (RS) Oklahoma City, OK.  While serving at RS OKC he earned RS Rookie Recruiter of the Year and RS Recruiter of the Year. 

In September 1997, Staff Sergeant (SSgt) Fry was assigned to Marine Aerial Refueler Transport Training Squadron 253, MAG-14, 2DMAW, MCAS Cherry Point, NC.  He held the billets of Information Systems Coordinator (ISC), Squadron Gunnery Sergeant, and Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) Lead Instructor for MCAS Cherry Point, NC. 

In August 2000, SSgt Fry was assigned to Marine Tactical Electronic Warfare Squadron 4, MAG-14, 2dMAW and was promoted to Gunnery Sergeant in December 2000 where he held the billets of ISC, Squadron Gunnery Sergeant, and MSF Lead Rider Coach for MCAS Cherry Point and served a tour in Operation Southern Watch in Saudi Arabia in 2002. 

In February 2004, First Sergeant (1stSgt) Fry was assigned to Company A, 1st Battalion, 8th Marines (1/8) and served in Operation Iraqi Freedom II and participated in Operation Al Fajr (Phantom Fury), Fallujah, Iraq from November 2004 to January 2005.  In March 2005 1stSgt Fry was assigned to Headquarters and Service (H&S) Company, 1/8 and was deployed to Mississippi and Louisiana to provide humanitarian relief after Hurricane Katrina.  In 2006, while deployed with the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU),  1/8 he aided in the humanitarian relief by evacuating American citizens out of Beirut, Lebanon and reinforcing the American Embassy. 1stSgt Fry was selected for promotion to the rank of Sergeant Major (SgtMaj) out of the 2006 below zone.

In October 2007, SgtMaj Fry was assigned to VMA-214, MAG-13, Yuma, AZ during the squadron’s 31st MEU deployment.  SgtMaj Fry deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom 2009 and was the Site SgtMaj at Kandahar and performed all repatriation ceremonies for fallen Marines. In March 2010, SgtMaj Fry was assigned to MALS-13, MAG-13 for duty.

In January 2012, SgtMaj Fry was assigned to 25th Marine Regiment as the Inspector and Instructor SgtMaj and deployed in support of Javelin Thrust 12, Heavy Metal 13 and African Lion 14.

In July 2014, SgtMaj Fry was assigned to his current position as the SgtMaj of Marine Aircraft Group 13, Yuma, AZ.

SgtMaj Fry’s personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal (w/gold star in lieu of 3rd award), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (w/gold star in lieu of 2nd award and combat distinguishing device), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (w/three gold stars in lieu of 4th award), and Combat Action Ribbon.
