Major Christopher R. Sherwood attended California State University Sacramento from 1999-2003 and was commissioned after receiving a BS in History.  Upon graduation of TBS, he attended flight training in Pensacola, Florida and was designated a Naval Aviator in August of 2006 and subsequently reported to HMM(T)-164, MCAS Camp Pendleton, California, for training in the CH-46E Sea Knight helicopter.

In the spring of 2007, First Lieutenant Sherwood reported to MAG-16 at MCAS Miramar, California and was assigned to HMM-166, “The Sea Elk”, where he initially served as the squadron NATOPS Officer.  In 2007-2008 Captain Sherwood deployed the 11th MEU aboard the USS Tarawa in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.  While deployed he participated in joint training on the island Gan, Maldives to in an effort to strengthen relations with the island nation.  The squadron returned after an extended deployment and quickly prepared for the next deployment.  In 2008, HMM-166 deployed once again with the 11th MEU aboard the USS Bonhomme Richard where Captain Sherwood served as the Airframes Officer in Charge, and was designated a CH-46E Division Leader and TERF instructor.  During this deployment Captain Sherwood served as lead planner and liaison for MAREX with the Indonesian Marine Corps.  Upon return to MCAS Miramar, in July of 2008 he participated in the process of preparing HMM-166 for sundown of the CH-46E and the transition to the MV-22B.

In December of 2009, Captain Sherwood transferred to the “Pale Horse” of VMM-561.  He served as the Current Operations Officer and initiated his transition to the MV-22B Osprey.  In May of 2011 Captain Sherwood received orders to the “Dragons” of HMM-265 aboard MCAS Futenma, Okinawa Japan in order to stand up VMM-265 as the Assistant Operations Officer.  Captain Sherwood served with VMM-265 form 2011-2013 conducting several exercises around the Pacific theater often introducing the MV-22 for the first time in history.  In February of 2013 Captain Sherwood attended the Naval School of Aviation Safety aboard NAS Pensacola, Florida to earn his Aviation Safety Officer designation.

While he was with VMM-265 Captain Sherwood conducted two patrols with the 31st MEU aboard the USS Bonhomme Richard.  In November of 2013 Captain Sherwood deployed to Luzon, Philippines for Operation Damayan in support of humanitarian disaster relief efforts following typhoon Haiyan.  In March of 2014 Captain Sherwood was promoted to Major while conducting exercises on the Korean peninsula.

In the summer of 2014 Major Sherwood received orders to MAG-36 to serve as the Director of Safety and Standardization.  During this time he revamped course rules and range procedures around Okinawa Japan to adapt to the introduction of the MV-22.  During this time he and his team conducted surveys around the Pacific to ensure safe operations could be conducted by MAG-36 assets.

In the Summer of 2015 Major Sherwood received orders back to MCAS Miramar and MAG-16. While he was with MAG-16 he was assigned to plan and execute the multi-national exercise Dawn Blitz.  Major Sherwood reported to his current command, VMM-363, “The Red Lions”, in October 2015 and deployed in April of 2016 as the Logistics Officer with the Special Purpose Marine Air Ground Task Force – Crisis Response – Central Command aboard Al Jaber, Kuwait and in support of Operation Inherent Resolve.  In July of 2016 he was assigned to the position of Aircraft Maintenance Officer until July of 2017 when he assumed his current duties as the squadron Executive Officer.
