Sergeant Major James A. Mabe

Sergeant Major Mabe enlisted in the Marine Corps in February 2007 and attended Recruit Training at MCRD Parris Island, South Carolina where he was meritoriously promoted to the rank of Private First Class. Upon completion of Recruit Training, he continued training at Marine Combat Training (MCT) School, at Camp Geiger aboard Camp Lejeune, N.C. Following MCT, he reported to Personnel Administration School, Camp Johnson, North Carolina where he received the MOS of 0151, Administrative Specialist.

In September 2007, Private First Class Mabe reported to Headquarters Battalion, 1st Marine Division, Camp Pendleton, California. He assumed the billet of a Casualty Operations Clerk and later transferred to 1st Marine Division G-1 to work as an Administrative Separations Clerk and was later promoted to Lance Corporal. In December 2008, Lance Corporal Mabe was promoted meritoriously to the rank of Corporal.

Corporal Mabe reported to Marine Corps Installations West, Camp Pendleton, California February 2009 where he was hand selected to work as the NCOIC of the Staff Secretary's section and was subsequently awarded his first Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal and was meritoriously promoted to the rank of Sergeant in May 2010.

In January 2011, Sergeant Mabe reported to the 31st, Marine Expeditionary Unit, Command Element, 3rd Marine Division, Okinawa, Japan. He served as the Administrative NCOIC within the Command Element aboard the USS Essex and the USS Germantown. While assigned to the Command Element of the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, Sergeant Mabe participated in multinational exercises Cobra Gold,  SSang Yong, as well as Operation Tomodachi where he was boots on ground to assist in humanitarian disaster relief efforts.

In June 2012, Sergeant Mabe reported to Drill Instructor School, Class 4-12, Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego, California. Upon completing Drill Instructor School, Sergeant Mabe was assigned to 3rd Battalion, Company M, where he served as a Drill Instructor, Senior Drill Instructor and Chief Drill Instructor. During his tenure aboard MCRD, San Diego Sergeant Mabe graduated from Marine Water Survival School and served as a Marine Corps Instructor of Water Survival (MCIWS). Shortly thereafter Sergeant Mabe was meritoriously promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant in June 2014.

In January 2018 Staff Sergeant Mabe was promoted to the rank of Gunnery Sergeant and was assigned as the Enlisted Promotions, Administrative Chief within the Promotion Branch, Manpower Management Division where he was responsible for training officer and enlisted board members for nine Staff-Non-Commissioned Officer promotion boards. Gunnery Sergeant Mabe departed Quantico, VA and reported to SUNY Maritime College in Bronx, New York to serve as the Assistant Marine Officer at a consortium of universities that also included Fordham, Columbia, and Molloy Universities. During this tour, he served two summer assignments as a Sergeant Instructor at Officer Candidates School, Quantico, Virginia. Upon completion of his tour as an AMOI, GySgt Mabe was frocked to First Sergeant in February 2022 prior to departing from New York City, NY.

In March 2022, First Sergeant Mabe reported to Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center (MCAGCC) Twentynine Palms, California to serve as Battery First Sergeant for Battery K, 3rd Battalion, 11th Marines, 1st Marine Division where he deployed in support of Marine Rotational Force Darwin 23.3. Upon return from deployment First Sergeant Mabe was assigned as the Headquarters Battery First Sergeant for the duration of his tour.

In July 2024, First Sergeant Mabe reported for duty aboard Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego, where he served as the Unit Senior Enlisted Leader for Company L, 3rd Recruit Training Battalion, Marine Corps Recruit Depot.  In August 2025, Sergeant Major Mabe was frocked to his current rank and assumed to VMFA-232 “Red Devils,” MAG-11, 3rd MAW, MCAS Miramar, San Diego, CA where he currently serves as the Squadron Sergeant Major.

Sergeant Major Mabe's personal decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with three gold stars in lieu of fourth award, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with three gold stars in lieu of fourth award and the Military Outstanding Volunteer Service medal. He holds a bachelor's degree in Organizational Leadership from Fordham University.
