Gunnery Sergeant Devin M. Borders

A native of Detroit, Michigan, Gunnery Sergeant Borders enlisted in the Marine Corps in January 2015 and attended recruit training aboard Marine Corps Recruit Depot (MCRD) Parris Island, South Carolina. Upon completion of recruit training, Private First Class Borders attended Marine Combat Training at Camp Geiger, North Carolina; and subsequently assigned to Personnel Administration School aboard
Camp Johnson, North Carolina.

Upon completion of Personnel Administration School in April 2016, PFC Borders was assigned as a Unit Diary Clerk aboard MCRD Parris Island, South Carolina for his first duty station. He was promoted to Lance Corporal May 2016 and Corporal in May 2017. He would ultimately serve as the Customer Service and Inbound section’s Non-commissioned Officer in Charge before being transferred to Marine Corps Base Quantico for Marine Security Guard (MSG) School class 1-18.

Upon graduation from MSG school, Corporal Borders was assigned to the United States Embassy in London, England in January 2018. While in London, Corporal Borders was promoted to Sergeant in May 2018 and ultimately served as a Watchstander and Assistant Detachment Commander. Sergeant Borders was hand selected to serve at a Designated Country High Threat Counterintelligence Post at the United States Consulate General in Chengdu, China.

Upon arrival to Chengdu in May 2019, he was assigned as the Operations Chief and later Assistant Detachment Commander. Due to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic and operational requirements, Sergeant Borders was assigned as the Detachment Commander. He was meritoriously promoted to Staff Sergeant in June 2020. Ultimately as a result of geopolitical tensions between the United States and China, Staff Sergeant Borders led the 72-hour deactivation and evacuation from post in July 2020.

He would go on to hot-fill the Assistant Detachment Commander billet at the United States Embassy in Seoul, South Korea for the remainder of his tour on MSG duty. In January 2021, Staff Sergeant Borders reported to Marine Corps Recruiting Station Pittsburgh,
Pennsylvania for assignment as the Station Administrative Chief. During his tour, he would hold many collateral duties including: Training Chief, Equal Opportunity Representative, Career Planner, and the Medical, Dental, and Limited Duty Coordinator.

In January 2024, Gunnery Sergeant Borders was promoted to his current rank and transferred to Marine Aircraft Group 39 to serve as the Group Administrative and Manpower Chief. He officially assumed his role as Unit Senior Enlisted Leader for Marine Aircraft Group 39 Headquarters Squadron in March 2026. Gunnery Sergeant Borders’ awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (one gold stars in lieu of second award, the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (one silver star in lieu of sixth award), the Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal, and the Marine Security Guard ribbon.
