Lieutenant Colonel Rees, a native of Fredericksburg, Texas, graduated from the University of Texas at Austin, and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in 2000.  Following the Basic School, he completed the Aircraft Maintenance Officer course in Pensacola, Florida. 

Upon graduating from Aircraft Maintenance Officer school, he was assigned to MALS-12 in Iwakuni, Japan.  Lieutenant Colonel Rees served as both the Airframes Division and Aviation Life Support Systems Division OIC and as MALS-12 Detachment OIC in support of exercise COPE TIGER in Okinawa, OPERATION NOBLE EAGLE in Guam, and exercise COBRA GOLD in Thailand.

In 2002, Lieutenant Colonel Rees executed orders to MALS-11 in San Diego, California.  He was assigned as the Airframes OIC for a short time before being transferred to VMFA(AW)-225 in November 2002, where he served as the Maintenance Material Control Officer.  In February 2003, Lieutenant Colonel Rees deployed with the Vikings to Al-Jabar Air Base, Kuwait in support of Operation Southern Watch and Operation IRAQI Freedom.  In 2004, Lieutenant Colonel Rees deployed to WESTPAC in support of the Unit Deployment Program (UDP) to Iwakuni, Japan.

In 2005, Lieutenant Colonel Rees was selected for the USMC Aviation Personnel Exchange Program and executed orders to 3 Squadron, Royal Australian Air Force, New South Wales, Australia.  He returned to California and reported to MALS-11 in July 2007, where he volunteered as an individual augment to the I MEF Command Element.  Lieutenant Colonel Rees worked in I MEF, G-3 Current Operations, as the Tactical Movement Control Center OIC and deployed to Fallujah, Iraq in January 2008 in support of OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM.  Lieutenant Colonel Rees redeployed in August 2008, and served as the MALS-11 Assistant Aircraft Maintenance Officer and Operations Officer.

In 2010, Lieutenant Colonel Rees reported to the Aviation Standards Branch, Training and Education Command in Quantico, Virginia.  He was assigned as the Aviation Training System Aircraft Maintenance Training Analyst and as the Enlisted Aircraft Maintenance Section Head.  Lieutenant Colonel Rees was selected for resident Intermediate Level School and reported to the USMC Command and Staff College.  Lieutenant Colonel Rees reported to MALS-39 in July of 2014 and held all three Department Head billets as Executive Officer, Supply Officer, and Operations Officer.  He was then assigned to Department of Aviation, Headquarters Marine Corps Aviation, where he held the billet of Aircraft Maintenance Officer in the Aviation Logistics Support Branch.  Lieutenant Colonel Rees assumed command of MALS-39 on 30 May 2019.

Lieutenant Colonel Rees is a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin and holds a Bachelor of Arts in Latin American Studies, and a Master of Education.  His personal decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal with gold star in lieu of 2nd award, the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with 3 gold stars in lieu of 4th award, and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with gold star in lieu of 2nd award.
