Sergeant Major Nunez assumed his current assignment as the Marine Wing Support Squadron 371 (MWSS-371) Sergeant Major on 22 November 2024. A native of Oakland, California, he entered the Marine Corps in January of 2001 and attended Recruit Training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot (MCRD) San Diego with 3rd Recruit Training Battalion, Kilo Company. Upon completion of recruit training, he attended Marine Combat Training at Marine Corps Base (MCB) Camp Pendleton, California, followed by Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) school at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri for training as a Motor Vehicle and Tractor Trailer Operator.
After MOS training, Private First Class (PFC) Nunez reported to 3d Marine Aircraft Wing, Marine Wing Support Squadron (MWSS-371) for duty as a tractor trailer operator in August 2001. Shortly after reporting to MWSS-371, the tragic events of 9/11 took place, and in January 2003, Lance Corporal (LCpl) Nunez deployed to Kuwait and Iraq in support of Operation Southern Watch and Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF). Following his return from Iraq in September 2003, Corporal (Cpl) Nunez deployed again in support of OIF II in February 2004.
In January 2005, Cpl Nunez departed active duty and was transferred to the Individual Ready Reserve. Following a two-year hiatus, Sergeant (Sgt) Nunez returned to active duty in March 2007 and was assigned to Combat Logistics Regiment 1 (CLR-1), Combat Logistics Battalion 7 (CLB-7) in May 2007. Sgt Nunez deployed in February 2008 in support of OIF 8.1.
In July 2009, Sgt Nunez attended Drill Instructor School, MCRD San Diego. He was assigned to 1st Recruit Training Battalion, Company Delta, where he served as Drill Instructor, and Senior Drill Instructor. Prior to executing orders away from the Drill Field, he attended Martial Arts Instructor Course, attaining the additional MOS of 0916.
In December 2012, Sgt Nunez reported to CLB-5, aboard MCB Camp Pendleton, California, where he was assigned as Platoon Sergeant. While with CLB-5, he attended the Combat Marksmanship Coaches Course in 2013, attaining the additional MOS of 0933. He was promoted to Staff Sergeant (SSgt) in October 2013, and served as the Company Gunnery Sergeant for Headquarters and Service (H&S) Company.
In January 2015, SSgt Nunez received orders to III Marine Expeditionary Force, 3d Marine Regiment, aboard Kaneohe Bay, MCB Hawaii, where he served as a Platoon Sergeant, and Motor Transport Licensing Examiner for Headquarters Company. He later attended Combat Marksmanship Trainer course and attained the additional MOS of 0931. SSgt Nunez was promoted to Gunnery Sergeant (GySgt) in October 2017.
In November 2017, GySgt Nunez reported to CLR-45, CLB-25, Red Bank, New Jersey, to serve on Inspector-Instructor duty with H&S Company as an advisor and mentor to the Select Marine Corps Reserve Marines. During his time with CLB-25, GySgt Nunez served as the Company GySgt, Licensing Examiner, Battalion Operations Chief, Combat Marksmanship Instructor, and various other billets. GySgt Nunez also served as the Toys for Tots coordinator, helping establish positive support and good relationships with the local community and organizations.
In December 2020, GySgt Nunez received orders to MCB Camp Pendleton, California, for duty as the 3d Assault Amphibious Battalion Motor Transport Chief. In December 2021, he was selected for promotion to First Sergeant (1stSgt), and in March 2022 he was frocked to 1stSgt prior to executing his next assignment.
In March 2022, 1stSgt Nunez reported to Headquarters Company, H&S Battalion for duty as the Company 1stSgt and was officially promoted on 1 July 2022. He then received orders to his next assignment, and in July 2024 he reported to Marine Corps Air Station Yuma, AZ for duty as the Company 1stSgt, Engineer Company, MWSS-371. In November 2024 he was selected for promotion, frocked to his current rank and was appointed as the Sergeant Major for MWSS-371, where he is currently serving.
1stSgt Nunez's personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (2nd award), and the Navy and the Marine Corps Achievement Medal (3rd award).
