Lieutenant Colonel Steven T. Suetos

Lieutenant Colonel Suetos graduated from Western Oregon University with a B.S. in Biology. He attended Officer Candidate School, Platoon Leaders Course, during the summer semesters of his first and third years of college. He was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in December 2006. 

Second Lieutenant Suetos reported to The Basic School in 2007. Upon completion, he reported for flight training aboard NAS Pensacola. There, he completed Aviation Preflight Indoctrination, primary flight training with VT-4, and advanced flight training with VT-86. First Lieutenant Suetos was winged as a Naval Flight Officer in October 2009. He was selected to fly in the F/A-18 Hornet and moved to MCAS Miramar for training with VMFAT-101. 

In 2011, he was promoted to Captain and received orders to VMFA(AW)-121 aboard MCAS Miramar. With the Green Knights, he deployed to support one Unit Deployment Program to the Western Pacific, participating in bilateral, combined, and joint exercises throughout Japan, Korea, and the Marianna Islands. He held the billet of Mission Planning Cell Officer. 

In late 2012, Captain Suetos received orders to VMFA(AW)-242 aboard MCAS Iwakuni. During his time there, he deployed on numerous detachments for training and exercises to Thailand, Australia, Guam, Korea, Philippines, Singapore, Okinawa, and Alaska. He held various positions within the squadron, including Squadron Logistics Officer, NATOPS Officer, and Ground Safety Officer. In 2015, he graduated from the Weapons and Tactics Instructor Course as well as the Marine Division Tactics Course. For the remainder of his tour, Captain Suetos served as the squadron's Training Officer and was promoted to Major in 2016. 

In December 2016, Major Suetos returned to VMFAT-101 as a F/A-18 instructor, serving as the Ground Safety Officer and Assistant Aircraft Maintenance Officer. Additionally, he earned a Master of Systems Analysis degree from the Naval Postgraduate School Distant Learning Program while serving with the Sharpshooters.  

In 2019, as part of the Commandant's Professional Intermediate-Level Education Board, he was selected to attend the Command and Staff College at Marine Corps University in Quantico, Virginia. Upon completing Command and Staff College, Major Suetos earned a Master of Military Studies degree in June 2020. 

In July 2020, Major Suetos reported to VMFA(AW)-533 aboard MCAS Beaufort. While serving with the Hawks, he participated in two Unit Deployment Programs. He once again participated in major exercises and flight operations alongside partners and allies throughout the Indo-Pacific area of responsibility. He served as the Operations Officer, Aircraft Maintenance Officer, and the Executive Officer. He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in October 2022.  

In June 2023, Lieutenant Colonel Suetos joined the Command Element of I MEF at Camp Pendleton, California. While there, he worked in the I MEF G3 Air Cell as the Fixed Wing Planner and TACAIR subject matter expert. He participated in several Command Post Exercises, assisted in exercise planning in the Philippines, and helped integrate Marine Corps aviation assets into PACAF concept and design large-force exercises. 

In March 2024, Lieutenant Colonel Suetos reported to MAG-11, MCAS Miramar, where he served as the Director of Safety and Standardization before assuming command of VMFA-232 in November 2024.

Lieutenant Colonel Suetos has logged over 2,100 military flight hours, including over 1,885 hours in the F/A-18. His awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with two gold stars and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal. Lieutenant Colonel Suetos is married, and he and his wife have four children.
