Executive Officer, Marine Attack Squadron 214
Major Kevin T. Smalley

Upon graduation from high school, Major Kevin T. Smalley enrolled in the United States Naval Academy.  He commissioned in May 2005 as a Second Lieutenant with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Systems Engineering.  After completion of The Basic School, Second Lieutenant Smalley reported to Aviation Preflight Indoctrination at NAS Pensacola, FL.  Next, Second Lieutenant Smalley reported to VT-28 at NAS Corpus Christi, TX for primary flight training.  First Lieutenant Smalley earned his wings of gold at NAS Kingsville, TX with VT-22 in July 2008.  First Lieutenant Smalley reported to Marine Attack Training Squadron 203 for training in the AV-8B Harrier II+ in September 2008, completing the course the following September. 

Captain Smalley received orders to Marine Attack Squadron 211 (VMA-211) at MCAS Yuma, AZ in November 2009.  He deployed to the Combined Air Operations Center in Qatar as an assistant Marine Liaison Officer from May to July 2010.  The Squadron deployed on the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit in January 2011, with Captain Smalley acting as the advance party Officer in Charge, Future Operations Officer and Ground Training Officer.  Upon return from Japan, Captain Smalley took over as the Logistics Officer for VMA-211.  The Squadron deployed to Operation Enduring Freedom in April 2012.  Returning from Afghanistan in November 2012, Captain Smalley took over the role of the Aviation Life Support Systems officer in charge.  During this time, he earned his Division Leader and Weapons Training Officer designations. 

In May 2013, Captain Smalley reported to Marine Attack Training Squadron 203 as an instructor pilot.  He served as a daily schedule writer as he progressed through the instructor under training program.  In May 2014, Captain Smalley took over the role of Airframes Division Officer and Aviation Life Support Systems Officer.  In June 2015, Major Smalley switched jobs again, taking over as the Information Systems Development Officer in the Tactics and Standardization department.  He promoted to his current rank in September 2015 and earned his Night Systems Instructor designation.

Major Smalley returned to NAS Kingsville in April 2017 where he excelled as an instructor, Senior Marine, and Operations Officer in VT-21. During this time he developed and implemented new metrics for analyzing scheduling efficiency which resulted in higher sortie rates.

Major Smalley received orders to return to MCAS Yuma, AZ and Marine Attack Squadron 311 in July 2019 to serve as the Squadron Executive Officer. He transferred to Marine Attack Squadron 214 “Black Sheep” in April 2020 to continue to serve as the Squadron Executive Officer.

Major Smalley’s decorations include the Air Medal with the numeral 4, (3) Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, and (2) Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals with combat distinguishing device.
