Colonel Batcheler was commissioned in the United States Marine Corps in March 2004 through the Officer Commissioning Program and graduation from Texas A&M University with a Bachelor of Science in Ocean Engineering. After completing The Basic School, he reported to NAS Pensacola, FL, earning his wings as a Naval Aviator in June 2006.
Following training at the CH-46E Medium Lift Assault Support Helicopter Training Squadron (HMMT-164), Colonel Batcheler was assigned to HMM-365 at Marine Corps Air Station New River, North Carolina, in February 2007. He served as the Aviation Combat Element Embarkation Officer for the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) and deployed to Kandahar, Afghanistan, in support of NATO/ISAF operations in 2008.
He later transitioned to the MV-22 Osprey at Marine Medium Tiltrotor Training Squadron 204. Rejoining VMM-365, he served as the Airframes Maintenance Officer, Pilot Training Officer, and Weapons and Tactics Instructor following his graduation from the Marine Aviation Weapons and Tactics Instructor Course. In 2010 and 2012, he deployed to Southwest Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
In July 2012, Colonel Batcheler reported to Marine Aviation Weapons and Tactics Squadron One (MAWTS-1) as an MV-22 Instructor Pilot. During this tour, he served as a large force exercise evolution coordinator, MV-22 Division Head, and Executive Officer. He subsequently attended the Australian Defence College in Canberra, Australia, to attend the Joint Accredited Command and Staff Course, earning a Master's Degree in Military Studies from the Australian National University before returning to the Fleet Marine Force in January 2017.
Colonel Batcheler was then assigned to Marine Aircraft Group 26 (MAG-26), VMM-162. As the Operations Officer for the 26th MEU's Air Combat Element, he led the unit during Defense Support to Civil Authorities in Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands following Hurricanes Irma and Maria, before deploying to the Middle East. Upon return, he served as the Executive Officer of VMM-162.
In July 2019, he reported to the Joint Staff at the Joint Information Operations Warfare Center in San Antonio, Texas, serving as an Information Operations and compartmented sensitive activities planner. He then reported to MAG-16 at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, California, serving temporarily as the Operations Officer before assuming command of VMM-163 "Evil Eyes" in November 2022. As commander, he supported bilateral exercises in the INDOPACOM area of responsibility, relinquishing command in October 2024.
Colonel Batcheler was then assigned to the 3d Marine Aircraft Wing Headquarters staff as the Current Operations Officer. Following a tour as a Military Fellow to the Center for Strategic and International Studies as part of the Executive Level Education program, he assumed his current role as Chief of Staff, 3d Marine Aircraft Wing, MCAS Miramar, CA.
Colonel Batcheler has flown more than 2,000 hours in naval aircraft, including over 500 combat flight hours. His personal decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (fourth award), the Air Medal (Numeral 9), the Navy Commendation Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal (3 gold stars), the Humanitarian Service Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Sea Service Deployment (3 gold stars), National Defense Service Medal and the NATO/ISAF Afghanistan Medal.
