Sergeant Major Bryan Johnson

Sergeant Major Bryan Johnson reported to Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, SC in July 2005, for recruit training. Upon graduating he received training at Marine Combat Training, Camp Lejeune, NC. Following Marine Combat Training he reported to Air Traffic Control School in Pensacola, Florida. He was promoted to the ranks of Private First Class and Lance Corporal while serving as the Platoon Sergeant for Barracks Support Platoon.

Upon completion of Air Traffic Control School he earned the MOS of 7251 Basic Air Traffic Controller (ATC).

In 2007, he received orders to Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, Japan. He served as a Basic Air Traffic Controller Trainee until qualifying as a 7257, becoming a certified Federal Aviation Administration Air Traffic Controller. In April 2008, he was promoted to Corporal and earned his qualification as a 7252 Local Controller obtaining a Certified Tower Operator qualification. As a result, he was nominated and awarded the Air Traffic Controller of the Year Award. Shortly after, he was designated as a Tower Watch Supervisor.

In April 2009, he received orders to Air Traffic Control Detachment C, Marine Air Control Squadron 2, Marine Air Control Group 28, 2D Marine Aircraft Wing (MAW) at Marine Corps Auxiliary Landing Field Bogue, NC. He was promoted to the rank of Sergeant and earned all Air Traffic Control Tower qualifications. In July 2009, he was assigned to Marine Medium Tilt-rotor Squadron 162 with the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit, Marine Mobile Air Traffic Control Team as a Local Controller in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM/Operation UNIFIED RESPONSE. Following deployment, he attended the Military Airspace Management Course where he graduated as the top Marine in his class.

In October 2012 he was promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant. He then served in the additional billets of Facility Watch Officer, Air Traffic Control Chief, Training Chief, and Operations Chief becoming the subject matter expert for the Marine Corps expeditionary airfield while still stationed at Marine Corps Auxiliary Landing Field Bogue. In September 2012, he was assigned to the 26th Marine  

Expeditionary Unit as the Marine Mobile Air Traffic Control Team Staff Noncommissioned Officer in Charge in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM. Following his second deployment in 2013, he attended Career Course and shortly after, executed orders to Marine Recruit Corps Depot Parris Island, South Carolina to attend Drill Instructor School 3-14.

In July 2014, he successfully completed Drill Instructor School and was assigned to Second Battalion, Hotel Company, serving as a Drill Instructor, a Senior Drill Instructor, and a Series Chief Drill Instructor. During his time on quota, he served as a Recruit Training Facility Instructor, the Recruit Training Facility Company Gunnery Sergeant and the Instructional Training Company Staff Noncommissioned Officer in Charge. In December of 2016, he was promoted to the rank of Gunnery Sergeant.

In July 2017, he reported to Marine Air Traffic Control Detachment A, Marine Air Control Squadron 1, Marine Air Control Group 38, 3D Marine Air Wing, Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, California. Upon checking in he was immediately tasked to the Special Purpose Marine Air Ground Task Force Crisis Response 1-18 as the Detachment Staff Noncommissioned Officer in Charge in support of Operation INHERENT RESOLVE, and was responsible for three geographically displaced locations. Upon returning from deployment, he was selected as the Operations Chief, while simultaneously serving in the assistant billets of Training Chief and the Weapons and Tactic Training Program Chief. In 2018, he was selected for the 32 Area Staff Noncommissioned Officer in Charge billet for Lance Corporal Seminar comprised of three separate units before attending Advanced Course and graduating in July 2019.

In July 2019, after graduating from Advanced Course, he resumed his duties as Operations Chief and served as the Marine Air Traffic Control Detachment A Company Gunnery Sergeant. During this time, he was selected by the 3D MAW Sergeant Major to serve as the Staff Noncommissioned Officer in Charge for the 3D MAW Corporals Course, Lance Corporal Leadership and Ethics Seminar and the Train the Trainer schools in July 2020.

In February 2022 he was promoted to the rank of First Sergeant and executed orders to the Marine Corps first Littoral Logistics Company B, 3D Littoral Logistics Battalion, 3D Marine Littoral Regiment (MLR) participating in the first iteration of Philippine Deployments. In February 2024, he executed orders to 3D MLR, Headquarters and Service Company. In July 2025, he was Frocked to Sergeant Major and transferred to Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 122, Marine Corps Air Station Yuma, AZ as the Command Senior Enlisted Leader.

Sergeant Major Johnson's personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (second award) and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (third award).
