Sergeant Major Goodyear completed recruit training at MCRD San Diego, CA in August 1996 and was assigned to Camp Pendleton, CA for Infantry Training School as a Mortarman 0341.

 

In November 1996, Private First Class (PFC) Goodyear received orders to Marine Barracks, Guantanamo Bay Cuba.  PFC Goodyear was attached to Rifle Security Company Windward, and provided fence line security.

 

In December 1997, Lance Corporal (LCpl) Goodyear was transferred to 2nd Battalion 4th Marines Weapons Company 81’s Platoon.  During this tour he deployed with the 31st MEU in support of Operation Desert Fox and Desert Anvil.  During this tour he earned the rank of Corporal and Sergeant (Sgt) before requesting assignment to Marine Security Guard Battalion.

 

From August 1999, Sgt Goodyear was assigned as a Watch Stander with the Marine Security Guard Battalion serving time in US Embassy’s Vienna, Austria, Moscow, Russia, and assisted with the opening of the Marine Detachment in Vilnius, Lithuania.  He was meritoriously promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant (SSgt) in July of 2002.

 

In September 2002, SSgt Goodyear was transferred to 1st Battalion 2nd Marines (1/2) and served as a section leader for 81’s Platoon.  He deployed in support of Iraqi Freedom, upon his return, he was transferred to Bravo Company 1/2 and was redeployed to Iraq serving as a Rifle Platoon Sergeant until April 2005.

 

SSgt Goodyear was assigned to Recruiting Station (RS) St Louis, MO in July 2005.  While serving at RS St Louis as the Staff Noncommissioned Officer of Recruiting Sub Station (RSS) Quincy, IL he led his RSS to be station of the year.    He was promoted to Gunnery Sergeant (GySgt) April 2006.

 

In June 2008, GySgt Goodyear was assigned to 2nd Battalion 8th Marines (2/8) He held the billets of Combined Anti-Armor Team (CAAT) Platoon Sergeant and deployed to Afghanistan in early 2009.  Upon his return he was promoted to First Sergeant (1stSgt) and transferred to Golf Company 2/8 where he served as the Company First Sergeant.  He deployed again to Afghanistan in November 2010.

 

In May 2011, 1stSgt Goodyear was selected to attend Class 62 of the Army Sergeant Major Academy.    

 

In July 2012, 1stSgt Goodyear was assigned as the Inspector and Instructor First Sergeant Headquarters Company 25th Marine Regiment. Promoted to the rank of Sergeant Major (SgtMaj) and transferred to VFMA 211, in May 2015 until April 2018. He was transferred to his current billet with MALS-11 in May 2018.

 

His personal awards include the Purple Heart Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (w/one gold star in lieu of 2nd award), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (w/four gold star in lieu of 5th award and combat distinguishing device), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (w/one gold star in lieu of 2nd award), and Combat Action Ribbon (w/one gold star in lieu of 2nd award).
