Lieutenant Colonel Atiim Phillips is from Chesapeake, Virginia. He enlisted in the Virginia Army National Guard in 1994. After graduating Basic Training and Advanced Infantry Training in August 1995, he reported to 1/116th, 29th Infantry Division and served as an M60 gunner and weapons squad leader. He was accepted into Marine Corps Officer Candidate School in 1999. Lieutenant Colonel Phillips graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in 1998 with a Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies. He was commissioned via the Officer Candidate Course on August 13, 1999.
Following completion of The Basic School and Communications Information Systems Officer Course in August 2000, Lieutenant Colonel Phillips reported to 8th Communication Battalion, where he served as a Platoon Commander and Company Operations Officer and Executive Officer. He later led communications planning for the Direct Support Company in the activation of 4th Marine Expeditionary Brigade (MEB). In February 2004, he deployed with the 22d Marine Expeditionary Unit as the Joint Task Force Enabler Detachment OIC in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
In October 2004, Captain Phillips received orders to the Defense Information Systems Agency, where he was assigned to the Global Information Grid Engineering Services Directorate as the Assistant Lead Secure Internet Protocol Router Network (SIPRNet) Engineer and Lead Internet Protocol Demilitarized Zone Engineer. In February 2007, he received a Master’s of Science degree in Information Systems Management from the University of Phoenix. Following graduation from Expeditionary Warfare School and Advanced Communications Officer Course in 2008, Captain Phillips received orders to Marine Wing Communications Squadron 38 (MWCS-38), where he served as Detachment C Commander and Squadron Executive Officer. He deployed as the Third Marine Aircraft Wing (3d MAW) Deputy Assistant Chief of Staff G-6 and G-6 Operations Officer in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
In 2011, Major Phillips executed orders to Communications School in Quantico, Virginia as the Course Coordinator and Chief Instructor for the Basic and Advanced Instruction Groups. In 2014, Major Phillips attended Marine Corps Command and Staff College, where he received a Master’s degree in Military Studies. In June 2015, he was assigned to Marine Air Ground Task Force Staff Training Program Division, where he served as the Deputy Branch Head of the Communications Information Systems Branch. In 2016, Lieutenant Colonel Phillips was promoted to his current grade and served as Assistant Chief of Staff G-6, 3d Marine Expeditionary Brigade / Task Force-76. In 2018, he executed orders to Marine Corps Cyberspace Operations Group, where he served as the Executive Officer. Lieutenant Colonel Phillips will assume command of MWCS-38 in June 2021.
His personal decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal (fifth award), Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, and Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal.
