Major Julie James

Major James is a native of Waterloo, Illinois.  She received her commission as a Second Lieutenant of Marines through the Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps program at the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana, where she earned a BS in Psychology, May 2007.


Major James attended The Basic School from July 2007 to January 2008 and upon completion attended the Air Traffic Control (ATC) School in Pensacola, FL.  Subsequently, she served as a Crew Officer-in-Charge at Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Cherry Point ATC Facility.  Major James deployed as an individual augment to Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) serving as a Joint Visitor’s Bureau Action Officer with the Combined Joint Task Force (CJTF) 101 and CJTF-82 from February to August 2009.  Post-deployment, Major James served as the Detachment Commander for Marine Air Traffic Control Detachment (MATCD) C, Marine Air Control Squadron 2 (MACS-2) until May 2011. 


From 2011 to 2014, Major James was assigned to Marine Tactical Command Squadron 38 (MTACS-38), Marine Air Control Group 38 (MACG-38), 3d Marine Aircraft Wing (3d MAW).    Major James deployed as a Senior Air Coordinator and Close Battle Coordinator in support of Operation Enduring Freedom 12.2 and 14.1.  Major James filled multiple billets within MTACS-38 to include TACC Operations Platoon Commander, Headquarters & Service Company Commander, and Weapon & Tactics Training Program (WTTP) Officer. 


From 2014 to 2017, Major James was the ATC Facility Officer at Marine Corps Air Facility (MCAF) Quantico responsible for ensuring the safe and efficient flow of the daily flight operations in support of Marine Helicopter Squadron One’s (HMX-1) Presidential movements.     

As the I Marine Expeditionary Force (MEF) G-3 Air C2 Planner, from 2017 to 2020, Major James led the Air Center’s planning efforts for MEF Exercise (MEFEX) 2018 and 2020, Pacific Blitz 2019, and Contingency Planning.
