Capt. Irving Elson, a chaplain with I Marine Expeditionary Force, lights the shamash, or “attendant” candle for a Hanukkah menorah lighting aboard Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, Calif., Dec. 2. Elson used the shamash to light the remaining candles as part of a tradition in the holiday.
