Jun 24, 2014
Marine Cpl. William “Kyle” Carpenter, recent Medal of Honor recipient, addresses a crowd aboard Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, Calif., during an evening colors ceremony, June 23. The Marines of the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing and MCAS Miramar recognized the spirit of the noncommissioned officer to pay tribute to the sacrifices of Carpenter, the most recent Medal of Honor recipient. On June 19, 2014, Carpenter joined the ranks of Medal of Honor recipients for conspicuous gallantry at the risk of his life while serving as a squad automatic rifleman with Company F, 2nd Battalion, 9th Marines, Regimental Combat Team 1, I Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward), Nov. 21, 2010 in Marjah District, Helmand Province, Afghanistan. As a lance corporal, Carpenter risked life and limb to shield his fellow Marine when a hand grenade detonated in their sandbagged position.
