A U.S. Air Force HC-130J Combat King II aircraft assigned to the 920th Rescue Wing flies over Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, California, during combat search and rescue training with Marine Corps F-35B Lightning II aircraft assigned to Marine Fighter Attack Training Squadron (VMFAT) 502, Marine Aircraft Group 11, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, as part of Exercise Steel Knight 23.2, Dec. 5, 2023. Combat search and rescue is a specialized operation carried out by rescue forces to safely retrieve isolated personnel from contested environments or emergency situations. Steel Knight 23.2 is a three-phase exercise designed to train I Marine Expeditionary Force in the planning, deployment and command and control of a joint force against a peer or near-peer adversary combat force and enhance existing live-fire and maneuver capabilities of the Marine Air-Ground Task Force.
