Lance Cpl. Mediya Abakar, Arabic-speaking supply clerk, explains to a group of workers aboard Al Asad on Jan 29, 2005 the importance of participating in the first free democratic elections in their country?s history set to start at 7:30 a.m. the next day. Abakar took it upon herself to conduct a sort of Iraqi ?Rock the Vote? program as she visited key locations on base speaking to people in groups or individually. Many Iraqi?s she spoke to were at first hesitant to visit the polling sites due to fear of violence but were encouraged by the fact that security measures had been increased and how their vote could impact the future of their country
