Mead, a 22-year-old from Johnson City, N.Y., and Yard, a 22-year-old from LaHarpe, Ill., were part of a 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing effort to transport election workers and materials throughout the Al Anbar province prior to the Jan. 30 elections, the first democratic elections in the nation's history.
