(From left to right) Sgt. Diego Sarracino, Lance Cpl. Salvador Caban and Sgt. Nicolas Glyshaw prepare the RQ-2B Pioneer unmanned aerial vehicle and the pneumatic launch truck for an upcoming flight at Al Taqaddum, Iraq, Feb. 28. The three Marines are UAV mechanics with Marine Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Squadron 1, Marine Air Control Group 38, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing. The pneumatic launch slingshots the Pioneer into the air while the engine is at full throttle. When the UAV clears the truck, an external UAV operator takes control of the aircraft. With the average flight lasting only five hours and the squadron having reached more than 3,000 flight hours, the Marines of VMU-1 have honed their skills to complete their mission a cut above the rest.
