Gen. James T. Conway, 34th commandant of the Marine Corps, salutes the colors held by the United States Marine Corps Color Guard during the commissioning of the USS Makin Island, (LHD-8) here Oct. 24. During his speech, Conway emphasized the significance of the ship and thanked the Marines of 2nd Raider Battalion who fought and died on that island during World War II. The ship’s name honors Raiders’ heroic actions.
