Pontoons rest at the edge of the Euphrates River. Engineers float the bridge sections into position, weld the sections together and anchor the pontoons to the river bottom. Currently, units crossing the river at this site must raft vehicles and equipment across the waterway or travel more than 45 minutes out of their way to a bridge crossing.
