AL ASAD, Iraq -- Operational authority was passed from Marine Wing Support Group 27, 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing to Marine Wing Support Group 37, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, during a transfer of authority ceremony Jan. 21.
The TOA marked the third time the two squadrons have changed hands in Iraq.
“I was here nine months ago and have seen the improvements MWSG-27 has made,” said Sgt. Maj. Roger E. Jenness, sergeant Major, MWSG-37. “I personally know the work and effort they’ve put in and I appreciate our camaraderie; it’s hard going back and forth.”
According to Col. Daniel W. Elzie, commanding officer, MWSG-37, there aren’t going to be any major changes in the way business is done.
“We’re going to focus on supporting the aviation combat element’s efforts to facilitate the transfer of provincial control to the Iraqis,” said Elzie. “We will continue to build upon the high level of support MWSG-27 set for us. We’re going to build upon their success, because they’re doing it the right way.”
With Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, Calif. based MWSG-37 taking over the responsibility, MWSG-27 will be heading back to Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, N.C.
“I’m very proud of the job MWSG-27 did supporting the ACE. I’m proud to be here during this historic year in the war,” said Col. Peter M. Warker, commanding officer, MWSG-27. “We’re looking forward to a safe return of our folks and continued support for our squadrons.”
Though MWSG-27 is ready to return home, MWSG-37 is in the beginning stages of their deployment and meeting their challenges head on.
“Twenty-seven has set us up for success,” said Jenness. “I’m looking forward to the challenges ahead!”
