Marine Air Control Group 38 obtained command from its East Coast counterpart, MACG-28 in a ceremony here Jan. 26.

This transfer of authority constitutes the second changeover between the 2nd and 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing units at Al Asad Air Base.

While operating in the Al Anbar Province, the group will continue to support the Aviation Combat Element and Marine Air Ground Task Force. The group will also provide airspace coordination, communications, immediate air control, radar surveillance and unmanned aerial vehicles across the region.

“We are looking for areas of improvement and small refinements,” said Col. Peter C. Reddy, MACG- 38 commanding officer, who plans no big changes to operating procedures. “If the Multi-National Forces West mission changes, we will adjust.”

Reddy established three goals for his troops in theater: to accomplish the mission, to ensure troop welfare and to represent the unit, Corps and country honorably.

“Our short-term goal is to integrate into operations as quickly as possible, without missing a beat during the transition,” said Sgt. Maj. Anthony Jenkins, MACG-38 sergeant major.

As the West Coast group begins adapting to the tempo, the troops of MACG-28, prepare to return to Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, N.C.

“During the yearlong deployment, the troops sustained a high morale as well as a sense of purpose and dedication,” said Col. Kenyon Gill, MACG-28 commanding officer. “The group has a great sense of accomplishment for what we were able to contribute this year. It is my hope that each Marine redeploys, having bettered themselves, both personally and professionally.”
