SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego Council Navy League of the United States recognized more than 50 women from military installations around the West Coast at the 46th Annual San Diego Naval Services Enlisted Women of the Year luncheon and awards ceremony here March 31.
The women represented all ranks and jobs from the Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard, and more than 20 represented 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing.
All of the honorees were command nominated, and had to write an essay on “what military service means to me.” A board of five women also picked the winners based on their leadership, education, community service and professionalism.
The two award categories are broken down by seniors and juniors, which is based on their rank. The junior award went to Petty Officer 2nd Class Brenda Tzintzun. The award for senior honorees went to Master Sgt. Betty Kramer, the avionics chief with Marine Attack Squadron 214, 3rd MAW, I Marine Expeditionary Force.
“I was totally shocked,” said Kramer. “I did not expect it at all!”
Maj. Neil Booker, who nominated Kramer for the award, said she proved herself in combat and at the squadron.
“Both her job with the squadron and outside the wire, she put in a phenomenal effort,” said Booker.
The winners in the categories received many prizes donated by local businesses, including flowers, a one-hour massage and a scholarship.
Only two women were picked for the final award, but John Schmidt, the president of the San Diego Navy League and a retired Navy captain, said it’s important to remember all enlisted women and the mark they’ve made on the military.
“I believe the U.S. could not have survived as a volunteer force without the induction of women,” said Schmidt. “This is the Navy Leagues way of saying ‘thank you.'"
