The Single Marine Program held its 3rd annual Big Marine Little Marine event at Mills Park aboard Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, Calif., August 24.

Miramar Marines mentored the Young Marines through physical activities and one-on-one conversations throughout the day-long event.

“The SMP helps Marines on base find positive outlets, such as this event, to give back to their community,” said Johannah Jones, the SMP coordinator for MCAS Miramar.

Active-duty Marines paired with Young Marines for the day’s activities including water balloon tosses, three legged races, and combat courses designed to challenge and entertain the Young Marines.

At the end of the day, Sgt. Maj. Richard Charron, MCAS Miramar sergeant major, brought the participants together for a motivated run around Mills Park.

“I wish I had something like this back when I was their age,” said Charron during his speech to all those that participated. “One day, we will grow old and [watch from] the sidelines and these Young Marines will take over.”

Throughout the day awards were given to the young Marines who were top performers among their peers. Because of the events that took place and the excited participation of the Young Marines and their parents, there will definitely be more Big Marine Little Marine events in the years to come, Jones explained.
